Hull City and Bristol City had both shown interest in signing the 24-year-old ex-Luton forward, who scored 18 goals for Brentford last season.

Just the one minute added on at St Andrew's and Birmingham go in to the break a goal to the good.

More than what they deserve for creating some decent chances.

What a strike from Birmingham midfielder Stephen Gleeson to give his side the lead just before half-time.

His drilled effort from about 30 yards does take a deflection on the way, but Scott Carson isn't stopping that as it nestles in the bottom corner.

That's Gleeson's first goal for the club, in what his 45th appearance for Blues.

  5. Birmingham City 0-0 Derby Countypublished at 43 mins

Some good old-fashioned hoof ball from Derby as Johnny Russell clears the lines for the visitors with a long punt upfield.

Eventually comes back to his front men, but suddenly after a flurry of chances, there's little cutting-edge in the final third.

A PA announcement at St Andrew's is very audible over the crowd as the game goes into a bit of a lull just before half-time.

Can someone find a breakthrough before the interval?

  7. Birmingham City 0-0 Derby Countypublished at 37 mins

Johnny Russell makes a strange choice as he's presented with a chance to rifle one in the back of the net for Derby.

He opts to go for a cute bit of placement from the edge of the area instead, but the ball just floats harmlessly by. Wasteful.

Birmingham's Jon Toral finds himself unfairly penalised for a strong tackle on Cyrus Christie in the centre circle.

Plenty of bite in this one, despite no goals so far.

And here is another chance as Demarai Gray unleashes a stinging shot for Birmingham.

Cuts inside off the left wing and drives one with his right. Scott Carson dives across to palm it well away from danger.

As Ged just mentioned, plenty of chances so far, but no goals in this one.

You get the feeling an opener isn't far away with the quality on display in both attacks tonight.

  11. CLOSE!published at 27 mins

    Birmingham City 0-0 Derby County

A cheeky attempt from distance by David Cotterill as he spots Scott Carson off his line.

Shoots from inside his own half, but it's going over.

Referee Lee Mason reckons Carson tipped it over though and awards a corner.

BBC Sport's Ged Scott at St Andrew's:

"Chances coming thick and fast at both ends - but the biggest roar of the night so far undoubtedly reserved for Darren Bent. The former Aston Villa striker appeared to have set himself up to fire Derby ahead, only to drag his effort the wrong side of the post.

"Even though he hardly covered himself in glory in his days across the city, Bent's presence as an ex-Villa player at St Andrew's was still enough to earn a loud chorus of ironic cheers from the home fans.

"It went a lot quieter a few minutes later when Tom Ince's shot bounced back off Blues keeper Tomasz Kuszczak's right post."

Derby force another corner after Demarai Gray lets one deflect off him.

Comes to nothing for the visitors and as Birmingham go down the other end, there's a shout for handball against Derby captain Richard Keogh.

Would've been harsh had it been given after bouncing off his knee on to his arm.

Great strike from Tom Ince and he is inches away from opening the scoring.

A rifling left-foot shot from distance curling away from the goalkeeper, but not close enough to bounce in off the left post.

  15. Birmingham City 0-0 Derby Countypublished at 19 mins

Two corners in succession for Derby.

The first, a real non-event. The second eventually leads to a half-chance for both Tom Ince and Darren Bent.

Tomasz Kuszczak saves well at Bent's feet to push it out for another corner.

The visitors growing in confidence now.

  16. Birmingham City 0-0 Derby Countypublished at 17 mins

Darren Bent involved in the action again.

Craig Forsyth hangs a deep cross in from the left, but Bent can't get his header on target.

  17. Birmingham City 0-0 Derby Countypublished at 14 mins

Derby finally show some attacking intent.

Tom Ince marauds forward and finds Johnny Russell in the area. He can't get his shot away in time, but it falls to Darren Bent.

The former Aston Villa man does no better though and it's out for a goal kick, much to the delight of the home supporters.

  18. No place for new signing Brock-Madsenpublished at 13 mins

    Birmingham City 0-0 Derby County

Birmingham named an unchanged side for tonight's game with Derby, meaning new signing Nicolai Brock-Madsen will have to wait a little while for his Blues debut.

The 22-year-old forward has joined from Danish side Randers for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £500,000.

Birmingham in the thick of the action again as Jon Toral latches on to a free-kick which deflects off the Derby wall.

His ambitious left-foot volley goes well over Scott Carson's goal though.

    Chance here for Clayton Donaldson.

Stephen Gleeson floats a ball in to the Derby area and the striker looks to nod it towards goal, but directs it straight at Scott Carson.

Early encouragement for the home side.
