  1. 'United not settled under Van Gaal'published at 19:18

    Manchester United v Wolfsburg

    Alan Green
BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"I don't think Manchester United are a settled team yet. Louis van Gaal hasn't settled on his defence yet. I don't know what he's doing defensively at times, although injuries haven't helped.

"The front four are very attack minded but does Van Gaal feel comfortable with that? It puts a lot of pressure on the midfield players who sit."

Chris Hughes: British clubs should develop British players. Big clubs cannot bully little clubs. Just look at John Stones.

Adam: Wayne Rooney at 10 is never a good idea, ridiculous long balls and wasted possession inbound.

Torsten Jensen: I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see City lose and United only get a draw. Bendtner to snatch the equalizer for Wolfsburg.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "For our team it is important to demonstrate we can qualify for the next stage. We lost three points in the first game against Juventus so it is important to recover now."

On the return of Joe Hart, Yaya Toure and David Silva: "Fortunately they have all recovered but we still have too many injuries. But we still have a competitive team and I hope we can take three points by playing the way we played at the start of the season."

On City's tactics tonight: "We never play waiting - we always go from the start. But they have quick players so we will have to be careful."

  5. 'English teams can't defend in Europe'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 30 September 2015

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Daily Telegraph Northern Football correspondent Mark Ogden, speaking to 5 live: "English teams have forgotten how to defend these days. They don't go away more and shut a game down. United and City have quality in the team but are suspect at the back.

"I can't see an English team winning the Champions League with their attacks either. You look at what Barcelona and Bayern Munich have in attack and the Premier League is lagging behind."

"Goalkeepers David de Gea and Sergio Romero first out to begin their warm-ups at Old Trafford.

"Being number one evidently brings certain privileges.

"For whilst De Gea could jog his way into the penalty area, Romero had to lug the bag of balls."

Monchengladbach v Man City (19:45 BST)

There aren't many caretaker managers who get to have a Champions League campaign under their belt, but Borussia Monchengladbach will be led out by stand-in Andre Schubert tonight.

Former youth coach Schubert took over a fortnight ago when Lucien Favre resigned after they failed to collect a single point from their first five Bundesliga matches.

After that damaging defeat at home to Juventus last time out it was put to Manuel Pellegrini that Manchester City have a history of failure in the Champions League.

“I don’t think we fail in Europe,” he said. “We have qualified for the knockout stages in my two seasons and lost to Barcelona, who are the best team in the world. We have beaten Bayern Munich twice.

"Last season we won our last two games, against Bayern Munich and Roma, so we know how to do it. This season we lost to Juventus – a strange game.”

  11. 'A big challenge'published at 19:07

Man Utd v Wolfsburg (19:45 BST)

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger - a summer buy from Bayern Munich - has urged caution against opposition he is familiar with.

"I scored my first goal away in Wolfsburg so I have my good memories," said Schweinsteiger, 31.

"They are not easy to play against, they are always tough matches. They have a good team and in the last three of four years have improved a lot. It's a big challenge for us."

  12. 'Kompany a big miss'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 30 September 2015

Monchengladbach v Man City (19:45 BST)

    Chris Waddle
BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"Manchester City's back four when missing Vincent Kompany looks a bit suspect. Nicolas Otamendi has only just come into the club and Martin Demichelis isn't getting any younger.

"Everyone thinks City will win but it will be interesting. They will create in the final third, but there will be goals at both ends I think."

Tom Haydon: Confident that Manchester United will get the win tonight but wary of Julian Draxler, yet to fulfil his potential but could be dangerous

Saqiul Hoque: My prediction is 1-0 United, and a rather stilted game but I don't care. Points are essential.

Kamran Ali: Lous van Gaal knows how to prepare for the big games. If Utd make it out of the group then they will go far.

    Malmo v Real Madrid

How will Real Madrid fare tonight in Sweden? They are already without their forwards Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez through injury, and Rafa Benitez has left Sergio Ramos and Pepe at home.

If Cristiano Ronaldo scores a hat-trick tonight he will become Real's all time leading scorer. Not bad for six years' work.

De Bruyne has scored three in his last three for his new club, while Wolfsburg used some of the cash to sign Germany international Julian Draxler from Schalke.

Other familiar faces on the books include ex-Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle and ex-Arsenal enigma Nicklas Bendtner...
