In case you needed a reminder as to why you should watch Match of the Day tonight, here is a big reason...

  4. 'That's life, that's football'published at 20:20

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic: "Hopefully this break comes at a good time, we get a result in the next game and drive on from there.

"We scored at a good time but unfortunately couldn't build from there. Southampton took their chances and made things difficult.

"When things are not going your way it's tough. It's a mental thing as well, something we need to keep fighting for - run through a brick wall, as they say.

"That's the way it goes when results don't go your way, confidence takes a hit. That's life, that's football. You go through your ups and downs."

  5. Manager reactionpublished at 20:15

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

More from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "I live in my case as manager. I live a situation where I know the player is good and I trust the player. I know what the player did for us in previous seasons. He is in a very bad momentum.

"What do I do? I trust him and keep him in the team or I change him. In this moment I am doing both. Sometimes I change and sometimes I give them two or three matches.

"In this moment I feel they all accept the decisions, understand the moment and understand I can drop or keep them to give them confidence."

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Apologies to Chelsea fans but I'm going to throw a few stats (courtesy of Opta) out there that may lead to fear and panic...

    • Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in seven of their eight Premier League games this season (the other game was a 2-0 win against Arsenal).
    • This is Chelsea’s lowest points total after eight games in a top-flight season since 1978-79 (4 points), when the two-points for a win rule was operating. Chelsea were relegated in this season.
    • Only Sunderland (18) have conceded more Premier League goals than Chelsea this season.

  8. Manager reactionpublished at 20:07

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman on Sky Sports: "That's a confidence everybody needs. If we can show this against Chelsea we can show it much more.

"We had a difficult start to the game, but we came back and we made it 1-1 with a great goal. The difference was how we came out of the dressing room, pressed Chelsea and had fantastic movement.

"In my opinion, we totally deserve three points today. Maybe, if they had one penalty we had two penalties, that's a decision for the referee.

"We've had experience of going 1-0 down. We showed belief and close to half time we were the better team. We tried to play good football, offensive football because we believe in that way of football."

A small consolation for Jose and Chelsea; they have been shielded from top billing on Match of the Day by Sergio Aguero's heroics. Minuscule consolation.

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Let's give Southampton some love. They defended resolutely, they attacked ruthlessly. They had the best player on the pitch in Sadio Mane. They are the first team to score three goals at Stamford Bridge against a Jose Mourinho team in the Premier League. They are now up to ninth in the table with 12 points.

Plenty of reaction to that Jose Mourinho reaction...

Matt Fallon: Deep words from Jose there! Few mentions of being sacked.... things happening behind the scenes?

Mark Russell: Mourinho reckons referees are afraid to give penalties. Looking at Ivanovic on van Dijk in the first half, he may have a point.

Dan: Mourinho: I have to take responsibility. Proceeds to lose the plot and blame everyone else.

The referee was to blame for not giving a penalty to Chelsea for the incident involving Radamel Falcao. I can sympathise with Jose on the decision not to award a spot-kick for this, as it was a very valid claim.

However, this ignores the two clear incidents when Southampton should have been awarded a penalty for the shirt-tug on Virgil van Dijk and the trip on Sadio Mane. You win some, you lose some.

Oh, and the fact that Southampton were the better side. That too.

  14. Jose's monologuepublished at 19:45

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

I would just like to add that all those quotes from Jose Mourinho constitute a single answer to the first question from his interviewer.

It was a seven-minute stream of consciousness from a man clearly under pressure, which he signed off with a simple "thank you, goodbye".

  15. Manager reactionpublished at 19:42

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

More from Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "If the club wants to sack me they have to sack me because I am not running away. To be champions now is very difficult because the distance is so much but I am convinced we will finish in the top four.

"It is a crucial moment in the history of this club because if they sack me they sack the best manager this club has ever had. The message is that the results are the fault of the manager.

"This is a moment for everybody to assume their responsibilities and stick together."

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "Look, I think you know me and I don't run away from my responsibilities. First, I want to say because we are in such a bad moment you should not be afraid to be honest.

"The referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea. At 1-1, it is a huge penalty and once again we don't get. If the FA wants to punish me they can. They don't punish other managers. My players deserve it and the fans deserve it.

"Referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea, why because there is always a question mark and we are always punished.

"Clear penalties are not given. Even in the Champions League in a match we lose 2-1, we are not given a penalty in the last minute.

"The penalty in this game is crucial because my team, at the moment, the first negative thing that happens, they collapse.

"The penalty was a giant penalty and after that the team lost even more confidence."

  17. Jose speakspublished at 19:40

    Chelsea 1-3 Southampton

Jose Mourinho has been speaking after the game and what he has had to say is worth sticking around for. He states that he will not walk away from the club and that the club will have to sack him to get rid of him, a manager he describes as "the best the club has ever had." Full quotes coming soon.

Huge test for Jose now. No disputing he is one of the great managers but most of it has been achieved with huge financial backing. Now he has to manage his way out and not spend his way out. Can he do it ? Not so sure this time.

Just to add, this was a Southampton team who were without a win in 10 away league games. They have made a mockery of that stat.
