  1. Post update

I'll sign off now on what has been another frustrating night for Celtic in Europe. No wins from five Europa League outings, 11 goals conceded, it's not pretty for the Scottish champions.

We'll be back tomorrow with St Johnstone v Dundee in the Premiership.

  4. Post update

The end of the line for Celtic is a trip to Fenerbahce next month.  The game is meaningless for the Scottish champions but the Turks have it all to play for since Ajax can still catch them.

  5. Post update

Celtic were seriously under strength tonight, with four first-choice midfielders missing. There were a few bright points as Jozo Simunovic had a good game in defence and Scott Allan showed promise in his late cameo but the overriding feeling will be of disappointment.

Celtic lost 2-1 at home to Ajax
  6. Post update

Celtic played the final few moments with 10 men since Charlie Mulgrew, a second half substitute, went off, presumably with some kind of injury.

The Scotland international was making his first appearance since mid-September after a thigh injury.

  7. Post update

Two points from five matches is a pretty miserable haul and Celtic will be frustrated at not building on the great start they had when Callum McGregor shot them ahead.

The Scottish champions have been ahead against Ajax three times in this group and were 2-0 up at one stage against Fenerbahce...

  8. FULL-TIME

    Celtic 1-2 Ajax

Celtic are out of Europe and will finish bottom of Group A.

  9. CLOSE!

A remarkable scramble in the Celtic penalty box as Mikael Lustig makes a great sliding challenge in front of his own goal and Craig Gordon stops a point-blank shot.

  10. Post update

We're into stoppage-time now as Celtic keep plugging away gamely but it looks like another loss from a leading position in Europe.

  11. GOAL

    Celtic 1-2 Ajax (Cerny)

Ajax break from defending their own penalty area and, with hardly a Celtic defender in sight, Vaclav Cerny slots a shot in at Craig Gordon's near post, with the keeper going down very early.

  12. HITS THE WOODWORK

As news of a second Fenerbache goal in Molde filters through, Amin Younes thumps a shot against the post.

  13. Post update

It's not been a great night for Leigh Griffiths as the Celtic striker struggles to get the ball under control after Stuart Armstrong picks him out with a low cross. He's crowded out and the eventual shot has no fizz on it...

  14. Post update

Scott Allan certainly has packed a lot into this cameo role as he gets a booking for a cruncher on Ajax captain Davy Klaassen.

Just prior to that, Emilio Izaguirre replaced Kieran Tierney at left-back.

  15. Post update

    Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Quote Message: Since Scott Allan has come on he's been terrific. His passing is pin sharp and quick. In a few minutes he's created great chances for Griffiths and Mulgrew. Where has he been all this time?
  16. CLOSE!

Celtic are turning the screw as James Forrest floats a free-kick to the back post and there is Charlie Mulgrew, who looks favourite to nod home, but he can't keep the effort under the bar.

  17. Post update

It's the Scott Allan show right now as the substitute midfield turns smartly to embark on another surge forward but this time his pass for Leigh Griffiths is a touch over-hit.

  18. Post update

Scott Allan drives forward after winning the ball deep in his own half and releases Leigh Griffiths with another neat pass but the striker runs into trouble this time.

  19. CLOSE!

Scott Allan makes a difference straight away, cutting Ajax open with a great pass to Leigh Griffiths, who is one-on-one with the keeper but can't beat Jasper Cillessen.

  20. Post update

Both teams make a couple of changes, with Celtic bringing on Charlie Mulgrew and Scott Allan. Tom Rogic and Gary Mackay-Steven are the men withdrawn.

  21. Time running out

  22. Not good news from Norway

Bad news for both teams here. Fenerbahce have taken the lead in Molde. As it stands, Celtic and Ajax are going out.

  23. HITS THE WOODWORK

Callum McGregor is close to his second goal of the evening as his long-range strike takes a big deflection off a defender and loops onto the junction of crossbar and post.

  24. Post update

Celtic spring a quick counter-attack and James Forrest rakes in a shot in that Jaspar Cillessen scrambles after at his near post.

  25. Post update

Lasse Schone caught Craig Gordon out with a free-kick in Amsterdam but the Celtic keeper is right behind this whipped effort from near the byline.

  26. Post update

The Ajax pressure is building again as Celtic struggle to retain any meaningful possession.

  27. Post update

Now Ajax have a wee spell of pressure and Mike van der Hoorn should really do better as he connects with a corner but the defender had lost his bearings and was facing the wrong way as the ball pinged off him in a congested box.

  28. Post update

More groans aimed at Leigh Griffiths as he fails to pick out a strong central run from Tom Rogic, opting instead for a tricky lofted pass to an offside James Forrest.

  29. Post update

Groans from the home fans as Leigh Griffiths is way off target with a shot from the left side of the penalty area.

  30. Post update

More of the same so far, as both sides look to gallop forward at every opportunity. A touch of composure might not go amiss but it makes for a compelling contest.

  31. KICK-OFF

We're up and running again. A draw could keep both teams alive going into the final group fixtures but a win would be so much better.

  32. Post update

The teams are back out, no changes in personnel.

  33. Post update

Celtic will need to keep an eye on Amin Younes, who has been impressive for Ajax. The 22-year-old German is a real box of tricks. A latter-day Kevin McAllister...

  34. Post update

The opener from Callum McGregor came after just three minutes and it was a thing of beauty. Can Celtic find another goal or two after the interval?

Quote Message: The first half has flown by. Celtic are putting together some lovely passages of play. They're attacking with a real pace and threat after conceding a cheap equaliser . Good and bad in their game. Really hard one to call
  36. In the balance

  37. Post update

In the other Group A match, it's Molde 0-0 Fenerbahce

  38. HALF-TIME

    Celtic 1-1 Ajax

It's been breathless stuff at Celtic Park, with both sides really having a go. Celtic got off to the perfect start as Callum McGregor curled in a peach of a shot but Ajax hit back strongly and were good value for their equaliser, which came from Arkadiusz Milik.

  39. Post update

This is better from Celtic as Leigh Griffiths hares after the ball again and cuts it across goal for Tom Rogic to side-foot straight at Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen. The big Aussie midfielder should be doing better from right in front of goal but he had strayed marginally offside, so it wouldn't have counted anyway.

  40. Post update

Just to illustrate that last point, Dedryk Boyata gets his body in the way of a fierce Amin Younes shot and in the blink of an eye Leigh Griffiths is charging after a long ball in the Ajex box but he can't escape his marker to get a clean shot away and his eventual effort is scooped up by Jasper Cillessen.

  41. Post update

The action is speeding from one end to the other at a rapid rate of knots. It's like a basketball game as the fans roar their approval.

  42. Post update

Celtic fans are not happy as Callum McGregor is absolutely banjo-ed by a late sliding tackle but referee Felix Zwayer waves play on and Leigh Griffiths finds some space behind the Ajax defence for the first time, only to slam a shot into the side-netting.

  43. Post update

Another slick move from the Dutch side sees them venture into the home penalty box and it takes a good intervention from Stuart Armstrong to prevent Lasse Schone getting a shot away.

  44. CLOSE!

Celtic are creaking as Ajax keep driving forward. The lively Amin Younes cuts in from the left and curls a shot just over the top.

  45. Same old problem

  46. GOAL

    Celtic 1-1 Ajax (Milik)

The Celtic defence is sliced open as Viktor Fischer is denied by a good point-blank save from Craig Gordon but the Ajax man is able to nod the loose ball in the direction of Arkadiusz Milik, who hooks it in from close range.

    Milik levels for Ajax
  47. Post update

Ajax are creeping into this now, enjoying more and more possession. A nifty free-kick routine sees Lasse Schone scamper behind the Celtic defence but Craig Gordon is there to snuff out the danger.

  48. Post update

    Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Quote Message: Terrific start at Celtic Park. Callum McGregor has started one game for Celtic this season but he's been like a buzz bomb. Beautiful curling finish for the opening goal. Ajax have settled now though. Viktor Fischer's goal should have stood. The home team have been warned
  49. DISALLOWED GOAL

Big let off for Celtic. Viktor Fischer absolutely lashes the ball in for Ajax after Amin Younes knocks it into his path. The assistant ref has his flag in the air but TV replays show he's got that one wrong...

  50. Post update

Ajax like to knock the ball around but they are being reduced to long, hopeful passes at the moment as Celtic work hard to press and pack men behind the ball when not in possession.

  51. Dream start

  52. GOAL

    Celtic 1-0 Ajax (McGregor)

Maybe he should start games more often! Callum McGergor gathers a pass from Gary Mackay-Steven and jinks past an opponent before planting a wonderful curling finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty box.

  53. KICK-OFF

Celtic get the game started, with Ajax, playing in day-glo green tops and dark green shorts.

  54. Post update

Of the six goals Celtic have scored in this tournament, Kris Commons has three and he set up the other three, so it's fair to say he'll be missed. Someone needs to step up and fill his size nines tonight...

    Kris Commons scores against Fenerbahce
  55. Post update

As the opening bars of 'Walk On' begin at Celtic Park, I'll remind you that Celtic twice led in Amsterdam back in September, only for the Dutch to hit back each time for a 2-2 draw.

Will we get another open, entertaining game?

  56. Defensive difficulties

Celtic have knocked in six goals from their four Europa League matches, which is not a bad return at this level and more than Ajax and Fenerbahce.

Celtic have conceded nine goals in four Europa League games

However, defensive shortcomings have cost Ronny Deila's team, with nine goals conceded. Without Nir Bitton and Scott Brown to protect the back four, does that diminish the prospects of first clean sheet yet further?

  57. Post update

    Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Quote Message: Celtic team tonight is young, but Ajax are incredibly young. Back four aged 20, 23, 19, 22. Ahead of them the captain Davy Klaasen is 22. Front three is 21,21 and 22. Poor in Europe, decent domestically. Scoring plenty. Ronny Deila missing an entire midfield. If he gets a win tonight it'll be the best result of his time at Celtic in my opinion
  58. Post update

Celtic skipper Scott Brown missed four matches before the international break due to a knee injury but the midfielder was hurt again on his return last Saturday and is now facing up to three months on the sidelines.

    Celtic captain Scott Brown

Brown damaged knee ligaments making a late lunging tackle in the 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock.

  59. Post update

Former Dutch international Fernando Ricksen is a guest at Celtic Park tonight. The ex-Rangers defender has been battling bravely with motor neurone disease since 2013.

    Fernando Ricksen at Celtic Park
  60. Post update

Celtic and Ajax are cruising along at the top of their respective leagues but it's been far from plain sailing in Europe.

Both failed to progress from Champions League qualifying and both have struggled so far in this competition.

Neither has managed a win yet and time is running out, with Ajax one point better off than the hosts after three draws from their four outings.

  62. Post update

This is just a second start of the season for Callum McGregor, with the previous one coming against Raith Rovers in the League Cup. The 22-year-old has featured nine times as a sub this season, scoring once...

  64. Post update

    Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Quote Message: There's not a defensively-minded midfielder out there for Celtic and that's a recipe for disaster - potentially
  65. Change of formation?

  66. Post update

So how does the new midfield look for Celtic? Manager Ronny Deila has resisted pitching in the experienced Charlie Mulgrew, who has been out through injury since mid-September.

Stuart Armstrong, Tom Rogic, James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Gary Mackay-Steven will be the five across the middle and I'm guessing the first two will be the 'sitters' in Deila's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

Teenager Kieran Tierney starts ahead of Emilio Izaguirre at left-back.

  67. Missing midfield

"We need a new one," said Celtic manager Ronny Deila at his Wednesday media conference. What was he talking about? His midfield...

Scott Brown and Kris Commons are missing through injury, while Nir Biton and Stefan Johansen are suspended. All four are pretty much nailed on starters.

  68. Team news

Celtic: Gordon; Lustig, Boyata, Simunovic, Tierney, Rogic, McGregor, Armstrong, Forrest, Griffiths, Mackay-Steven. Subs: Bailly, Ambrose, Izaguirre, Allan, Mulgrew, Stokes, Ciftci.

  69. Post update

The bad news is Celtic are bottom of Europa League Group A without a win from four matches.

The good news is the Scottish champions can still qualify for the last 32.

If Ronny Deila's team beat Ajax in Glasgow tonight and repeat the trick in Turkey against Fenerbahce they will go through, along with surprise package Molde, who have already qualified.

A defeat tonight and it's all over for Celtic. A draw will only keep slim hopes alive if Fenerbahce lose in Norway.
