Whether this historic win will be enough for Northern Ireland to reach the last 16 remains to be seen. After all, they only have the small matter of Germany to earn a point from in their final Group C game. 

But if they do go home on Wednesday morning then this afternoon will linger long in the memory of every Northern Irish fan. And, as a parting gift, here are the match highlights to watch on repeat for the rest of the night...

If Poland avoid defeat tonight then Ukraine are confirmed as the first team to be eliminated from Euro 2016.

• Gareth McAuley is the second oldest goalscorer ever in a EURO finals competition (36y 194d), second only to Austria’s Ivica Vastic (38y 256d v Poland in 2008).
• Six of McAuley’s eight goals for Northern Ireland have been headers.
• Niall McGinn netted his first goal for Northern Ireland since September 2014 (v Hungary).
• McGinn’s goal was the latest ever in a EURO finals competition in regular time (95:52).
• Northern Ireland won their first game at a major tournament since beating Spain in the 1982 World Cup.
• Ukraine have now gone 389 minutes since scoring in a EURO finals game, last scoring (twice) v Sweden on June 11, 2012.

Northern Ireland completed just 57% of their 230 passes. Ukraine played 535 and completed 82%. Ukraine almost hogged 70% of possession.

"They had to come out and win after a disappointing performance against Poland. Michael O'Neill made changes and went to players who got him here and it's worked for him.

"Tonight we used our best formation and got the result we needed."

Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley: "It is special to score. It will sink in over the next couple of days. It was the team performance tonight. It was a great reaction after the defeat by Poland. 

"We had a point to prove to ourselves. We thought we let ourselves down in our intensity. But we have put that right. It is pleasing and we will take confidence from it. But we have a tough game ahead."

"It was disappointing against Poland the way we set up. Tonight we saw a true Northern Ireland in our style of football, full of energy and aggression. Let's bring the same style against the Germans.

"I thought the back four were superb, limiting Ukraine to chances outside the box. It's a clean sheet which is fantastic in a major competition. You could have picked any one of the back four as man of the match."

The Northern Irish players are lapping up the applause in the Stade de Lyon. And rightly so. The GAWA have been soaked by rain and had their emotions stuck through the wringer. But who cares now!
