More from Italy boss Antonio Conte: "[We played] against a side that played a lot of long balls, there were a lot of powerful tackles. The pitch definitely helped them more than us but they put a lot of grit into this game because it was life and death for them.

"Congratulations to the Republic of Ireland because they really wanted to go through and they were rewarded, perhaps more than they deserved, but they were rewarded nonetheless."

More from Republic of Ireland match winner Robbie Brady: "All the plaudits to Wes Hoolahan as well. He put it right on my head. I would have done well to miss it.

"This was the last chance for us to push ourselves through. We were hard working and we had it all tonight. We stuck at it and put in a great performance and in the end got the result we deserved. Roll on France.

"We showed some fantastic results to get here. It has been a two-year project and we were not going to give up tonight. I don't think we have anything to fear going into this weekend. I think we can go as far as we allow ourselves in this tournament.

"I can't really explain this feeling. It is like an out of body experience and I was lucky enough to experience that tonight."

Italy boss Antonio Conte: "It was a tough contest, very physical on a barely playable pitch. If I am honest I was looking for a performance by my young players and I saw that because they scrapped. Today's match was very, very tough. We responded blow for blow. The pitch did punish us a bit more than them.

"Defeat doesn't mean anything but it has come on the back of two wins. We shouldn't let them get away with a loss. That said I saw some good responses from my players, these are tough games for everyone.

"Spain are one of the favourites to win the competition but now we will work hard to prepare for the game as best as possible."

The third place argument has been laid to rest. Two fantastic games - the 3-3 this afternoon and then this performance by the Republic of Ireland.

To think now that they will play France on Sunday. Who would have thought when we started this adventure that England, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland would all be in the last 16?

Republic of Ireland's Robbie Brady: "I grew up dreaming about this stage and to go and do it in front of my family is the best feeling in the world. We need to regroup and go again but I am absolutely flabbergasted by it all. Every single one of the lads were unbelievable tonight."

I think seeing Northern Ireland qualifying, the players would have been watching that and wanted to create their own bit of history tonight.

I knew Robbie Brady when he first came into Hull from Manchester United. He had that passion to play for his country from a young age and is a player you would want on your side every day of the week.

Every aspect of the Republic of Ireland's game tonight was excellent. It was a totally dominant display. This will go down as one of the greatest Irish nights in history.

Republic of Ireland match winner Robbie Brady: "What a moment for everyone involved, we said we were going to do a job and we did it. Into the last 16, we go again.

"My legs took me into the box for the goal and I am over the moon. I am emotional. I grew up waiting to play at this stage, to do it in front of my family is great."
