Sophie Gayter: So many positives tonight already. Borthwick-Jackson has been particularly impressive so far. Manchester United turning a corner finally?

Andrew Tarpey: Coincidence that United are looking so much better with Carrick back from injury? I don't think so.

Joe Wedgwood: Fell asleep, woke up and Utd were 2-0 up and cruising with only 30 minutes gone. Slightly worried I woke up in 1999....

"What riches here at Old Trafford... not one goal but two and a thoroughly deseved lead for Louis van Gaal's side.

"And what a talent Antony Martial is. Still questions about whether he is more effective wide or through the middle - but no problem with width there. Superb finish."

Pace and power being shown by Manchester United, where has this side been all season? "UNITED UNITED" chant the fans.

Frenchman Anthony Martial looks dangerous every time he gets on the ball and Wayne Rooney's touch is looking tip top.

The captain almost breaks through but the ball just runs away from him when approaching the Stoke penalty area. This is more like the United of old.

    Are you watching Guardiola?

Daniel Powell: That is a Manchester United goal! First since Ferguson days.

Ahmed: Remind me again... how much did Man United pay for Martial???

Josh Hammond: Two goals for United at home AND in the first half?! I must be dreaming!

    Man Utd 2-0 Stoke

United look in the mood today and may well hit Stoke for a few tonight if they're not careful. Just glimpses of a third, but the visitors hold out.

At the other end, Marko Arnautovic, who scored a stunner in the reverse fixture, can't do the same here, strangling a shot wide and there's no problems for David de Gea.

    Anthony Martial (23 mins)

What a move, what a finish.

This starts on the edge of Manchester United's own box and the balls ends up in the back of Stoke's net.

Michael Carrick, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney are all involved, with the captain playing a lovely ball across from right to left to the feet of Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman, on the edge of the box, steadies himself before curling an effort into the top corner.

    Two first-half goals, c'est magnifique.

  11. Lingard eases Man Utd's nervespublished at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2016

    Man Utd 1-0 Stoke

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Old Trafford

"A roar of approval around Old Trafford as Jesse Lingard's stooping header at the far post ends that barren sequence of 11 home games without a first-half goal for Manchester United.

"It was needed after a quiet start here and the first few groans of the night in the 12th minute when Chris Smalling brought the ball into the Stoke City half but was left frustrated by a lack of movement.

"Will do the confidence of Louis van Gaal's side the world of good."

A quick look at the Manchester United bench and Ryan Giggs seems to be missing. Where has Louis van Gaal's assistant gone?

  13. CLOSE!published at 16 mins

    Man Utd 1-0 Stoke

Nearly a quickfire second. Anthony Martial ghosts past Stoke full-back Glen Johnson like he's not there and smashes a low shot into the side netting.

Minutes later, he skirts across the Stoke defensive line and drills a low shot which Jack Butland gathers.

We've seen one first-half goal, will we see more? Now now, let's not be too greedy.

    Jesse Lingard (14 mins)

A first-half goal at Old Trafford!

Do my eyes deceive me? Is this really happening? Manchester United have scored before half-time and it's nicely done.

As I mentioned, have United spotted a weakness at Stoke's right-back position? It's where the goal comes from. Full-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson swings in a sumptuous ball which was inviting to be put away.

Jesse Lingard gratefully accepted, stooping to head the ball into the net. The home fans have woken up.

Juan Mata finds space in the Stoke box after a through ball from Anthony Martial. The Stoke defenders look to the linesman asking for a flag, but nothing comes.

The Spaniard is clearly onside but drags his effort wide of goal. Will the home faithful finally see a first-half goal? It's coming.

After a quiet start, Stoke are growing into the game. They are knocking the ball around beautifully and their spell of possession has quietened the Old Trafford crowd.

  17. 'Mourinho can match Guardiola'published at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2016

    Man Utd 0-0 Stoke

A player who knows both these two sides is defender Danny Higginbotham, who gave his reaction to Pep Guardiola's next assignment.

“Pep Guardiola to Manchester City was one of the world’s worst kept secrets, everyone knew it was going to happen. Manchester United now say they never really after him, how many are left that can manage the club and go up against Guardiola?" he told BBC World Service Sport.

"United have a great squad but the players are shackled with the way they are being asked to play by the manager. It is no surprise they are not scoring goals.

"I would look at Jose Mourinho because he has matched Guardiola and he is a winner, he knows what it takes to win the in the Premier League."

    Man Utd 0-0 Stoke

Ah, finally Stoke can get hold of the ball and threaten to show what they are capable of.

Ibrahim Afellay's shot from the edge of the area takes a deflection off a Manchester United defender and David de Gea rises to catch easily. Just a sign of what the away side can do.

    Man Utd 0-0 Stoke

No Xherdan Shaqiri or Mame Biram Diouf today for Stoke, both players are on the bench. Will the lack of pace hurt them and play into United's hands?

It's all the home side so far as Wayne Rooney wriggles in and out before unleashing a shot from around 30 yards out but it's easy for Jack Butland to gather.

    Man Utd 0-0 Stoke

The following corner was cleared by the visitors.

Have Manchester United spotted a weakness in Stoke right-back Glen Johnson? All the play is going down that side. Anthony Martial had a man-of-the-match performance against Derby in the FA Cup last Friday and may have a field day against the marauding defender.

Stoke haven't had a chance to get their foot on the ball yet.
