"Bastian Schweinsteiger has been the best player on the park today for me, he always looks like he has plenty of time on the ball.

"But he never has any options - he's pretty much standing on the ball at times."

"Sheffield United have done a very disciplined job on Man United there and they've got to be happy with that but Louis van Gaal won't be."

Daley Blind drops to the edge of the box to fire a shot over the bar. That was a rehearsed free-kick routine as found space from the cut-back. His bang average effort sums up the opening period for the home side.

"Glory, glory Man United" rings out over the PA system. Not very apt.

Nice build-up from the away side, John Brayford forward from right-back, plenty of zing on the cross, plenty of stick on David De Gea's hands.

A chance here for Wayne Rooney - dead ball, central, 30 yards. There's an air of suspense and then a huge roar from the away end as he finds the wall.

Rooney is quick to question if the wall was back far enough, he cuts the shape of a very frustrated man.

    Three added minutes.

Sometimes the average position graphics we use show us a side with good shape over the course of the half.

Today it seems Sheffield United are lovers of rush defending as there are plenty of gaps between their men. You can see a back four though, Martyn Woolford (17) on the left flank is helping his full-back a great deal. The pair of Dean Hammond (35) and Chris Basham (6) in front of the back four are offering some shield.

Just five minutes to the break. I wonder if we may get a few boos here. This has been pretty dire fare by Manchester United.

Dean Hammond commits a foul and the home side will have a free-kick some 40 yards out.

For now though treatment is needed for Paul Coutts and he will leave the field briefly - fine to carry on.

"It's within eight minutes to half time and Man Utd haven't had a single effort struck at goal. If anything David De Gea has been the busier of the two goalkeepers."

"It's a great ball by Daley Blind and a great run by Bastian Schweinsteiger but just head it.

"He's six yards out, just put your head on it."

Bastian Schweinsteiger asks the question tentatively. He knows there's nothing coming here. The German pulls a diagonal ball down in the box and Jay McEveley makes some contact with him but not enough. No sign of the referee pointing to the spot.

Now some daylight for Wayne Rooney, slipped through... no. Out comes George Long to slide at his feet, the ball had too much zip on it.

Surely Wayne Rooney is being wasted in this system? Just eight touches so far - only Billy Sharp (6) has less.

The home side cannot get their front man on the ball, it's a struggle.

He comes deep to get in the play and arrows a ball at Matteo Darmian but Jay McEveley intercepts, volleying the ball against the head of Darmian, much to the delight of the away fans.
