Summary

  • Burnley up to third in Championship

  • Three goals in 12 second-half minutes for Burnley

  • Derby fifth, without a win in five league games

  1. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 19 mins

Derby full-back Cyrus Christie has put in another delicious cross from the right and it is Jason Shackell who rises to meet it. However, it is just a tad bit high and Tom Heaton sees it go over.

Of course, that whole thing played out to boos from the home crowd aimed at ex-Burnley captain Shackell. That is not going to get old tonight.

  2. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 17 mins

Burnley striker Sam Vokes rises highest at the back post and forces an effort on target. Not much in the way of power or real danger, but Derby's back line needed to be clever there.

Joey Barton has done many things. He has also said many things. Even in French.

But can he notch up a milestone tonight and, for the first time in his career, score in a third successive Football League match?

And going back to the subject of Barton talking, he feels that the league's big spenders - Derby included - have more pressure on them to go up.

    We shall see.

As it stands, Derby are controlling things in the middle.

  4. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 11 mins

Cyrus Christie whips in a tantalising ball from the right for Derby. Matthew Lowton is alert to it at the back post and sees it out for a corner.

Derby really probing from all angles early on.

Tom Ince, with a sight at goal pulls the trigger. Tom Heaton is equal to it.

The Derby forward doesn't need much of an invite. Not a lot more going on for him in that scenario.

  7. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 5 mins

Some positive build up from the hosts, but the end product sees George Boyd attempt to swivel and shoot. The result is well off target, but Scott Arfield worked the ball in well off the left.

  8. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 2 mins

Tom Heaton made a great save down to his left. Chris Martin had a little bit more time than he thought.

  9. Burnley 0-0 Derbypublished at 2 mins

Derby captain Stephen Warnock gets a bit of whack as he falls into Joey Barton.

From the resulting free-kick, the ball is lofted into the area and Tom Heaton is called into action early - he gets down well to his left to keep out a shot from Chris Martin.

In the midfield, Jacob Butterfield takes his place alongside George Thorne and Bradley Johnson, while the only other change is up front with Chris Martin reclaiming his spot after coming off the bench in the 3-0 home loss to Birmingham City.

  15. Crisis... What crisis?published at 19:36

Paul Clement quote ahead of Burnley tripImage source, BBC Sport

A stumble. Stutter. Glitch. Call it anything, but is "crisis" really appropriate for Derby County's recent form?

Rams boss Paul Clement certainly doesn't seem to think that way, nor do his players. But there is certainly noise being made by some observers that feel two points from their last 12 (there will be a good few references to that stat tonight) and one goal from their last three league games is part of a bigger problem.

An argument can certainly be made for it - a stall in form at a similar time last season resulted in them going from top of the pile to finishing outside the play-off places.

The result was Steve McClaren's exit and Clement's arrival.

Oh, and don't forget Derby were winless in seven games to start the season under Clement.

Swings and roundabouts. All just swings and roundabouts.

    Burnley v Derby (19:45 GMT)

Burnley are unbeaten in four league games and entertain the Rams at Turf Moor, where they have lost only twice this term. The Clarets have also kept four clean sheets in their last six Championship outings.

Much has been made of Derby's recent stall in form, so let's look a bit beyond that.

Oh my - even that doesn't make for great reading for the Rams! They haven’t managed to get the better of Burnley in their last 11 meetings in the second tier.

Did someone say Burnley have won eight of 13 home league games this season? Yeah, that is a thing.

Thought it worth hammering the point home, as Derby will be desperate for a win tonight.

  18. Promotion contenders go head-to-headpublished at 19:30

Two heavily-tipped contenders for promotion meet on a cool January evening in Lancashire.

Ah, that can mean only one thing - Monday night Championship football.

Sean Dyche's Burnley, looking to bounce straight back to the Premier League, host a Derby County side that have stumbled in recent weeks. Victory for the Clarets will see them move ahead of Derby and up to third in the table.

The Rams may be sitting pretty in fourth place after 27 games, but taking just two points from a possible 12 since 29 December has prompted the question: can Paul Clement's side maintain their challenge and go up this season?
