    Real Madrid 4-2 Athletic Bilbao

You can't dispute that Real Madrid deserved to win - but Athletic Bilbao, for their cavalier approach, did not deserve to be thumped.

Athletic stay sixth for the time being, with both Celta Vigo - who play Barca tomorrow - and Eibar able to leapfrog them.

    Real Madrid 4-2 Athletic Bilbao

Athletic goalscorer Javier Eraso: "We had some chances in the first half, they didn't go in though. They continued to attack because we took risks up top and if you push up allow yourself to be exposed at the back."

Real Madrid midfielder Isco: "The team has responded well to Zidane, we are playing well and we're content with the three points at the Bernabeu. Athletic are a very strong team."

Job done! Real Madrid earn their fifth win in six matches under Zinedine Zidane. That moves them up to second - temporarily at least - one point behind leaders Barcelona.

    Gorka Elustondo

Too little too late. One for Gorka Elustondo to tell his grandkids about though - he's just scored against the mighty Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. A simple header gives the scoreline a fairer reflection.

GOAL - Real Madrid 4-1 Athletic Bilbaopublished at 88 mins

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Game, set and match. Cristiano Ronaldo is picked out at the far post by a deep right-wing cross, after the Athletic full-back had switched off for a moment. You cannot do that. Ronaldo punishes him by blasting in.

Athletic have a spring in their step now. But they haven't instantly been able to punch a hole in the Madrid defence.

  8. RED CARD - Raphael Varanepublished at 83 mins

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Game changer? Real Madrid must play the final seven minutes or so with a man light. Raphael Varane jumps high with Artiz Aduriz for a header, his arms raised like they were in a similar situation in the first half. That landed the France defender with a booking - and so does this one. Two yellows = red. Early bath time.

And that is James Rodriguez's last involvement. He is replaced by young midfielder Lucas Vazquez, who weakly shoots at the Athletic keeper within seconds.

Now Madrid drop down a gear. James Rodriguez, like he did for his wonderful goal earlier, picks up the ball around 30 yards out, cuts inside but can't get a clean shot away. In fact, it hits team-mate Karim Benzema, who is also offside. Double whammy.

Nothing much to report. Madrid strangling the life out of this game. Less than 15 minutes to go.

The fourth official is probably the busiest man in the Bernabeu at the moment, signing off substitution forms and playing with his big electronic board.

He's in action again as he introduces Real Madrid midfielder Isco to the game. Off comes the impressive Mateo Kovacic, who earns a deserved standing ovation.

    Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Hannover

It's all over in Dortmund where second-placed Borussia have scraped to a 1-0 win over bottom club Hannover.

Bayer Leverkusen have won 2-1 at Darmstadt to go third in the table, going above Hertha Berlin following their 2-0 defeat at Stuttgart.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 69 mins

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

The two teams trade substitutions. First up are Madrid, replacing right-back Danilo with Nacho. He might offer some more bite (sorry).

Athletic bring on attacking midfielder Iker Munain - who I remember was the next bright young thing a few years back - coming on for Iniago Lekue.

  16. GREAT SAVE!published at 68 mins

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Superb stuff from Madrid keeper Keylor Navas. Another Madrid defensive mishap - when Toni Kroos is dispossessed under pressure about 25 yards out from his goal - gives Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz a sniff. He tries to pounce on a loose ball, but Navas races out to block.

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Madrid have been dominant in this second half, without creating loads of chances. But here's one. The central run of Mateo Kovacic is picked out by his Croatian chum Luka Modric, but he shoots high over the Athletic goal.

  18. Postpublished at 65 mins

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Another chance for Athletic. Javier Eraso, their goalscorer, heads over after being picked out unmarked in the Madrid box. A second away goal would make a game of this again.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 62 mins

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

First roll of the tactical dice from Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde. And it appears to be a conservative one. Midfielder Ander Iturraspe is sacrificed for the more defensively-minded Gorka Elustondo.

    Real Madrid 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Warning sign for the home side though. Athletic aren't tapping out just yet. Sabin's cross from the right is juggled by Keylor Navas with the technique of an out-of-work circus clown, but no-one in a red and white striped shirt can take advantage.
