Summary

  • Jon Toral scores only goal for Blues

  • Birmingham one points outside play-offs

  • Hull miss chance to go top

  1. CLOSE!published at 32 mins

    Birmingham 1-0 Hull

Oh my word! Birmingham striker Clayton Donaldson almost scores an unbelievable bicycle kick - one he'd have been dining out on for years. Think Pele's equaliser in Escape to Victory.

Allan McGregor shatters his dreams by making an equally superb save.

  2. Birmingham 1-0 Hullpublished at 31 mins

Another Hull attack, another Hull chance. Sam Clucas should score from 10 yards, but puts his shot straight at Tomasz Kuszczak.

Birmingham are on course to move within one point of the Championship's top six - Jon Toral's deflected shot after 14 minutes still separates the teams.

  4. Birmingham 1-0 Hullpublished at 29 mins

Despite those two defensive escapes, Birmingham have settled quite nicely since opening the scoring.

Hull look a threat, though. Robert Snodgrass is the latest to go close, scuffing a volley into the arms of goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Michael Dawson really should have scored there. He lost his man beautifully on the run, great delivery from Snodgrass and it looked easy to score really.

  6. HULL HIT THE BARpublished at 23 mins

    Birmingham 1-0 Hull

Hull hit the woodwork for a second time! It's Michael Dawson this time, nodding a Robert Snodgrass free-kick against the crossbar from close range.

I asked you for your nightmare away journeys and you have not let me down.

Proof that football fans are a hardy bunch. Hardy if not always the most logical...

  8. HULL HIT THE POSTpublished at 20 mins

    Birmingham 1-0 Hull

Hull come within inches of an equaliser, as Jake Livermore unleashes a thunderous shot from 20 yards that hits the post and bounces clear.

  9. Birmingham 1-0 Hullpublished at 17 mins

That's only the third goal that Hull have conceded in the Championship in 2016, and ends their hopes of a sixth successive clean sheet in all competitions.

In the meantime, Hull's Mo Diame goes down heavily after being caught on the knee - unintentionally - by Blues left-back Jonathan Grounds.

  10. goal

    GOAL (Toral)published at 14 mins

    Birmingham 1-0 Hull

    We have a goal!

Hull dally on the ball inside their own half and it breaks to Jon Toral, who turns his man 25 yards from goal and sends in a low shot which deflects past Allan McGregor into the corner.

    Advantage Blues.

  11. Birmingham 0-0 Hullpublished at 13 mins

Birmingham's first sight of goal goes to Clayton Donaldson, but Hull skipper Michael Dawson is across quickly to force the ball behind for a corner before Donaldson can get his shot away.

It's early stages but Hull look like they've got the quality to win. Birmingham look to be struggling, but Hull look well up for this game.

  13. Birmingham 0-0 Hullpublished at 9 mins

Two of Birmingham's last five games have ended 0-0.

Three of Hull's last four games have ended 0-0.

PLEASE do not let this happen again, Birmingham and Hull. I want goals.

Plenty of endeavour but not much in the way of goalmouth action recently.

Blues have lost more home games than any other side in the Championship's top 12 this campaign, although they have won five of their last six league matches at St Andrew's.

They've been second best in the opening five minutes, with Hull having the majority of possession and that great early chance for Moses Odubajo.

  15. Birmingham 0-0 Hullpublished at 2 mins

The first chance goes Hull's way. Robert Snodgrass crosses for right-back Moses Odubajo, who fires over from six yards.

A big opportunity for the visitors inside the second minute.

  18. A long way from homepublished at 19:45

BBC Sport's Tom Garry is at the game tonight in spectating capacity. Looks like a few Hull fans are leaving it late to find their seat.

  19. Head-to-headpublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2016

    Birmingham v Hull (19:45 GMT)

Back to the Championship, and Birmingham City's rise to the outskirts of the play-off places has been a surprise one.

Gary Rowett inherited a struggling side when he took charge of Blues in October 2014, and with little or no financial support to speak of, he has taken them to eighth in the table.

Steve Bruce's Hull have been in and around the automatic promotion spots in the Championship for most of the season.

It will be a huge shock if they fail to finish in the top six, but, most importantly, will the Tigers be in the top two after 46 games?

    Battle of the Five-A-Sides

It's an achievement for me to get through 30 minutes of playing football these days, with my dodgy ankle and my penchant for pies.
