West Ham only had a few more seconds to hold out for a 2-1 win, but then came the second spot-kick decision of the match when referee Jon Moss judged Andy Carroll to have pushed Jeff Schlupp over in the area.

Hammers manager Slaven Bilic says the decision to award a penalty was "hard to explain".

Leicester were a goal to the good thanks to Jamie Vardy's 22nd league goal of the season in the 18th minute. 

But then came the first twist of the match when the England striker was shown a second yellow for diving as he was challenging for the ball along with Angelo Ogbonna.

Foxes boss manager Claudio Ranieri says the decision "changed the game",

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to BBC Sport: "It is very difficult, we had a lot of possession but did not make enough of it.

"We lacked a  change of pace, sharpness, they defended well. We put a lot of effort in but came out with a frustrating result. It is hard to accept, the competition goes on and we focus on the next one.

"I don't know how it works mathematically but we are too disappointed to think about the league, we have to think about the Champions League and fight to be in the Champions League.

"We have another home game on Thursday night and had to prepare for that.

"On their goal, it did not look unstoppable, maybe the shot surprised him, but we maybe should have stopped the shot. It is difficult to blame individuals."

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: “I felt the goal came too late for us. We felt in the second half had we got that goal earlier it would have made an interesting end to the game. We were missing that spark, especially in the first half. You have to give Liverpool credit. 

"We isolated Josh King, turned the ball over a lot in our own half and played ourselves into trouble. Marc Pugh and Lewis Grabban did well and Josh King was outstanding, there are positives from the defeat. The ball did hit a Liverpool player’s arm two or three times in their box. There’s certainly work to do between now and the end of the season."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "They've never played together. they could have defended better, played a bit more football in the first half, but it was really, really good. Danny Ward was brilliant. It was a clear foul (on the goalkeeper) open for all to see. Let the self-confidence grow of goalkeepers, they’re normal human beings.

"I'm really satisfied. Daniel Sturridge, what a striker. He had an unbelievable moment - the last chance he had - when he hit the bar, it was an unbelievable moment. He was involved in the last five, six or seven goals for us. Today it was nearly his goal the first, and he got the second. He becomes fitter and fitter. Perfect. Hopefully it stays like this, full of greed and readiness and passion.”

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew to BBC Sport: "It was an important win for us, it means two of the teams below us have to get 40 points and with our goal difference it will be difficult for them. It makes it easier for us to look forward to the semi-final and look to trying to get to mid table which is where I think we belong.

"The cup runs has affected us but I think we have put that to bed, we can't keep leaning on that and we needed to focus on the league and I think the players have taken that message on board. Hopefully we can pick up something at Manchester United."

Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann to BBC Sport: "We knew it would be a tough game, we dug in there, when it is 1-0 there is a good chance to get something out of the game, especially when we have players like Yannick who can pop up and get us a goal.

"In the first-half we lacked energy  they were on top, but we defended well and when Wayne Hennessey was called upon he made some good saves

"Looking at the table we would like to think we are safe, but until we are mathematically safe you can't turn a blind eye. We would like to get something out of Wednesday's match at Manchester United and start looking at teams above us."

Credit to Palace for taking a point from that game. After an absolute horror run, they are now unbeaten in three matches and - barring something spectacular - look to have avoided getting dragged into the relegation fight. They are now nine points clear.

Bishop Yinkus: I will never forgive Arsene Wenger for raising my hope of winning the title & then wrecked it with his sentiment.

Lamont Burke: I don't think Wenger could even motivate a preschool team anymore.

Neil Leverett: We can't cross, can't defend, can't press, can't finish. But above all, we can't fight.   

Petr Cech to Sky Sports: "We should have seen the game off, this is two dropped points. 

"They managed to get a counter-attack and hit it on the floor, the ball skidded fast, I got a bit of a touch.

"We need to win all the remaining games and we will see what will be the outcome of it."

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. The definition of madness? Or the definition of Arsenal's title challenge in recent seasons?

Palace had two shots on target in that game. They had just 28% of possession. They only had eight touches in the Arsenal box.

Arsenal's season summed up in a game. They dominated possession but failed to create anywhere near enough, leaving them vulnerable before shooting themselves in the foot. Palace are rewarded for digging in.

Wilfried Zaha has a huge chance to win this for Palace, but he wastes it. He beats Laurent Koscielny to the ball to leave it just himself, Gabriel and Emmanuel Adebayor in the box. But his touch is heavy, allowing the Gunners defender to charge over and tackle.
