Sunderland are leaving big gaps at the back as they search for an equaliser. Gianelli Imbula looks like he is clear for Stoke but checks back inside and ends up firing wide.

Seb Larsson is booked for a high challenge on Peter Crouch. Stoke have a free-kick deep in Black Cats territory - not what Sunderland need right now, and Glenn Whelan almost makes things worse when he shoots narrowly wide.

Sunderland are finding it hard enough to create chances, and now Stoke are bringing on another defender - Marc Muniesa is replacing Charlie Adam. 

Muniesa is involved already, putting a Sunderland corner behind for another corner. Peter Crouch heads this one clear.

Sunderland, more than ever, need some Jermain Defoe magic - but they will have to wait a bit longer... Defoe has just had a rare effort on goal, but saw the ball fly over the bar.

Bad news, Sunderland fans - Palace had their penalty saved. You are still in the relegation zone, as things stand.

Back at the Britannia, the Black Cats remain on the back foot and remain a goal down.

Some silky skills on display at Britannia Stadium - by Stoke boss Mark Hughes, who indulges in some ball-juggling on the touchline.

Stoke continue to attack, and Jon Walters and Peter Crouch combine to get on the end of a cross... but forget all that because up at St James' Park Crystal Palace have a penalty!

Another Stoke free-kick - eventually - Xherdan Shaqiri takes his time before lifting the ball into the box from near the right-hand corner flag. Jan Kirchhoff heads it clear.

Still time for Sunderland to get something here but they are going to have to improve up front. Stoke, meanwhile, have just seen Charlie Adam bend a free-kick over the bar.

It gets worse for Sunderland - Newcastle have scored, meaning the Black Cats are in the relegation zone as things stand.

Sunderland are still pressing but do not have anything to show for it. The Black Cats want a penalty when Duncan Watmore is held off by Erik Pieters inside the area. Referee Craig Pawson is having none of it.
