That Arnautovic chance is the sort of opening Jermain Defoe is probably dreaming of at the moment. The Sunderland striker has barely had a sniff so far, although he has just had a snap-shot from distance, which was easily dealt with by Stoke keeper Jakob Haugaard

Clear-cut chances have been few and far between so far, but here is one - and it has been wasted.

Gianelli Imbula finds a rare bit of space to run towards the Sunderland area and then feeds Marko Arnautovic, again in space, to his left. The Austrian has time to steady himself but instead he blasts high over the top.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Lamine Kone and Peter Crouch has been an intriguing battle so far, and Crouch is winning it. The Sunderland centre-half just gave away a free-kick after wrestling with Crouch for a high ball, but Xherdan Shaqiri fails with his attempt to find Crouch in the box from the resulting set-piece.

Better by Sunderland, who win the ball back in the Stoke half and then spread the ball from right to left... before Lee Cattermole's attempt at a through-ball flies straight out of play.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Stoke are creating the best chances, and are having most of the possession too. Sunderland are defending deep and playing on the break, but they have not spent much time in the Stoke half since that Jan Kirchhoff shot-cross.

Peter Crouch is getting closer you know, this time getting a cleaner contact with his header, but turning away in disappointment as he watches it bounce about a yard wide of the Sunderland goal.

Still no goals but some good play by Stoke's Marko Arnautovic. He waits to collect Deandre Yedlin's header rather than challenge the Sunderland full-back for a high ball forward, then turns past him down Stoke's left.

Arnautovic sends a dangerous ball across the face of goal too, but there is nobody to get on the end of it. A goal-kick, but it deserved more.

Stoke keeper Jakob Haugaard has been busy too - well, sort of.

He easily deals with Patrick van Aanholt's daisy-cutter as Sunderland break from the corner Vito Mannone conceded, then comfortably collects Jan Kirchhoff's tame shot-cross.

Still, the game is opening up a bit and, by the looks of the replay I've just seen, the Black Cats were unlucky not to get a free-kick just outside the box for a foul on Fabio Borini just before that Kirchhoff effort.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

I said earlier that Stoke were aiming for Peter Crouch... this time, they find him. His downward header almost finds Marko Arnautovic inside the six-yard box - the ball eludes him, and I think it is bouncing wide, but Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone takes no chances and pushes the ball behind.

Charlie Adam takes it too, but it is easily cleared by Sunderland, who had all 11 players back behind the ball.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Stoke are yet to have an effort at goal but they might threaten here - Charlie Adam, making his first league start since that game between these two in November, goes to ground and the Potters have a free-kick on the left, about 40 yards out.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Patrick van Aanholt scored one of Sunderland's goals when they beat Stoke at the Stadium of Light back in November. Duncan Watmore got the other, with both goals coming in the last eight minutes. What would Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce give for a similar outcome today?

Just as I was finishing that sentence, Defoe came within a whisker of testing Stoke keeper Jakob Haugaard. A corner was cleared as far as Patrick van Aanholt, whose shot from distance was off target but only just eluded Defoe, alert as ever in the box.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Up front for Sunderland is Peter Crouch's old striker partner at Tottenham and Portsmouth, Jermain Defoe.

Defoe has not seen much of the ball so far, and just gave the ball away when he did, but his goals are key to Sunderland's survival hopes, and he has form on the road - 10 of his 13 Premier League goals this season have come away from home, and he has scored nine in his last 10 away games.

    Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Stoke have had the better of the first few minutes and a pattern is emerging in their play - a lot of balls are being fired into the Sunderland box, aimed for Peter Crouch. I think Sunderland had better get used to that.

Hang on, because the sun has just come out...

And the first chance of the game arrives seconds later. Xherdan Shaqiri's ball over the top is weighted perfectly for Marko Arnautovic, who has given the Sunderland defence the slip, but then slips over himself. The ball bounces through to Vito Mannone.

It's been very scrappy in the first couple of minutes. Neither side has strung together any passes yet. Let's blame it on the weather.
