More from Louis Van Gaal on BBC Sport: "I think it's one of our best performances this season, but we didn't score the winning goal and we were so close, so it's a big pity. They are very strong with set plays and we have to organise better.

"We are still in the [top four] race because Manchester City still have to play Southampton away. It could have [been a red card for Danny Simpson] because he was Danny Simpson and he was the last man, but it was not a heavy foul so I can understand why he didn't give it."

If Tottenham can win at Chelsea tomorrow I'd strongly fancy Spurs to win their other two games and that means Leicester need to beat Everton or Chelsea. Or do they try and draw both games?...Not over by a long way if Spurs win tomorrow!

    Cal, Manchester.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "I think we played one of our best matches of the season, but it was not enough. It was a very difficult match for the referee - when you see what Huth is doing with Fellaini, is that not a penalty? [grabs reporter's hair.]

"Every human being who is grabbed with their hair would react. It is tougher when you don't win, of course it is tougher [to finish in the top four]. But Manchester City have to play Southampton away, so we are still in the race. For me Tottenham can also win - the best has to win. Tottenham has more points against us, but I think Leicester City deserves to win this championship. They have very good organisation, but we have a lot of chances."

    Brilliant.

  6. 'LVG wished me luck'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Man Utd 1-1 Leicester

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri: "The performance was good after the first 15 minutes, when we were a little scared. United started very well and it was difficult for us to restart. After the goal we played better and I think the draw is the right result.

"I wasn't worried because we have very good heart and I knew we would react. The goal maybe gave us more confidence slowly - without Jamie Vardy, it's difficult for us. Marouane Fellaini kicked Robert Huth and it wasn't a good show from him.

"For us it was important to show our mentality - the beginning wasn't good but after that I appreciated our performance. I'd like to watch the Tottenham match but I'm on a flight back from Italy so I might not know the result until I land. For us it's important to continue to work. I met Louis van Gaal in 1994 - he said to me good luck."

Wayne Rooney on BBC Sport: "We were the better team and deserved to win in my opinion. [Top four] is going to be difficult now, we're relying on other teams and we're going to have to take maximum points from our remaining games.

"Leicester have made it tough for teams all season but I felt we had the better chances. We're disappointed we didn't win the game, it's a blow, but we have to keep going."

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney on Sky Sports: "We're disappointed. I think we were the better team, we played with good tempo. After they scored we were a little bit off it, but we came out second half and I felt we dominated those 45 minutes.

"I feel I'm playing OK in midfield and I'm enjoying it. It's going to be tough to get in the top four now, we felt before this game we had to take maximum points from our remaining games."

Leicester captain Wes Morgan on Sky Sports: "It was very tough. Manchester United dominated possession and we had to dig in and be resilient. It's a point and it's a step in the right direction. It proved to be an important goal and to score at Old Trafford was a great feeling. I felt I had the better of my marker and any ball that was nearly in I thought I could get a touch. It's not ours until we get two hands on the trophy."

Danny Simpson: "We knew it was going to be tough. The last thing you want is to go 1-0 down early on but credit to the boys, we kept going. We're happy with the point - it would have been nice to have won it here. We'll try and get together tomorrow and watch the game. We'll keep going and see what happens."
