    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

More chants of "Sakho, Sakho, Sakho" after a brilliant challenge by Mamadou Sakho. Romelu Lukaku tries to bustle his way into the area but Sakho stands up to him superbly, wrapping his foot around the Everton striker to poke the ball away. Great defending.

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

There's a good tempo to this game but, aside from the early Adam Lallana one-on-one, not many clear cut chances. Everton will be happy with things so far.

  3. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Chances at both ends. The first goes Liverpool's way as Alberto Moreno floats in a cross towards the far post where Adam Lallana is lurking. He nods back across goal but Divock Origi isn't close enough to react.

Everton then go straight up the other end of the pitch as Gareth Barry's searching ball finds Kevin Mirrallas, he nutmegs Dejan Lovren but lashes well over.

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Adam Lallana clips Ross Barkley's ankle after a clever swivel by the Everton midfielder. Kevin Mirallas thumps the free-kick into the area, Mamadou Sakho heads away.

"Sakho, Sakho, Sakho" chant the home fans. A lot of love for the big defender.

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

And as I type that, a chance for Everton. Kevin Mirallas both makes and takes it, breaking from midfielder and, helped by a bounce off Mamadou Sakho, he has sight of goal but blasts over.

Ten minutes and Liverpool are on top and looking comfortable. Everton need to weather this early pressure.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 8 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Expect to see a few of these tonight. James Milner goes in referee Robert Madeley's book after a crunching challenge on Leighton Baines. He's got 82 minutes or so to go on that yellow. Got to be a strong chance of another red in this derby.

  9. Chance!published at 5 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

    What a chance for Liverpool!

Bryan Ovideo's sliced clearance is thumped forward by Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana is onside and through on goal. He advances into the area, has to be the opener, but he shoots straight at Joel Robles, who was quick to close down the gap.

  10. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Everton

A typically fast paced start to the derby!

Liverpool win a free-kick some 30 yards from goal after Philippe Coutinho is fouled. James Milner steps up to loft the ball into the area but Everton clear and then break, but Kevin Mirallas takes a touch too many as he tries to work something on the edge of the area.

You'd have to go back to the previous century to find the last time Everton won at Anfield.

The date? 27 September 1999. The score? 1-0. The match winner? Kevin Campbell.

Jurgen Klopp is leaning on the wall just outside the Liverpool dressing room watching his players come out into the tunnel. He bites his bottom lip as he studies the Everton players intently. Might be reading too much into this, but he certainly looks like he is feeling the nerves a tad now.

"These games are targeted at the start of the season and you are desperate to get the win in the derby. They are very special to be involved in.

"There is a lot of pressure on referee Robert Madeley tonight. Does he book an early challenge or allow it to go? If he allows some challenges to go then we could see a ferocious game.

"It feels a bit low key as both have semi-finals coming up in the FA Cup and Europa League."

No fixture has seen more red cards dished out in the Premier League era than Liverpool-Everton, but Jurgen Klopp doesn't want to see things get too feisty tonight.

"Before I went to Dortmund there were lots of red cards in derbies," he said. "I don't want to see this. Not to show 'I am the man'.

"Maybe one or two fans want to see stuff like this, but it will never help. I understand aggressiveness only in one way, and that is being prepared to hurt yourself, not somebody else."

  17. 'Everton seriously under-performing'published at 19:48 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

    Liverpool v Everton (20:00 BST)

    Kevin Kilbane
Former Everton winger on BBC Radio 5 live

"If Everton lose there will be huge pressure on manager Roberto Martinez. At Liverpool, it is all smiles.

"Everton are seriously under performing. With the talent Martinez has, they should be doing better. He continually says these lads like Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley have tremendous talent but then how can they be mid-table?

"He continually comes out saying they should be challenging for the top four so why aren't they? That is why the manager is under pressure."

As weeks go, this is a pretty big one for Roberto Martinez.

After the Merseyside derby, Everton face Manchester United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Martinez really needs a positive result from one of them - ideally both - to relieve a bit of the pressure on him following five games without a win.

“You don’t feel hurt from a manager’s point of view because you need to accept the results are not right," says Martinez. "They are not what we expect or what we promote."

Daniel Sturridge is on the bench tonight. That's because Jurgen Klopp doesn't want to squeeze everything out of the striker, especially after a long spell out with injury this season.

In typically fantastic rambling style, here Klopp explains why he won't treat Sturridge like an orange: "Now we can say ‘Oh my God, Daniel is back, let’s push him through all these games!’ Yeah? If you think that is right, write it. If not, don’t ask me anymore. We will do what we think.

“But still, after this long period, you cannot use him as an orange and take each little bit of the juice.”

If Daniel Sturridge scores against Everton he will reach 50 goals for Liverpool in just 87 appearances. Only Albert Stubbins, Roger Hunt and Fernando Torres have reached that milestone quicker in the post-war era.
