On this day: 15 May 2004 - Claudio Ranieri took charge of Chelsea for the last time in a 1-0 victory against Leeds

Claudio Ranieri was unceremoniously sacked as Chelsea manager despite leading the club to a second-placed finish in 2004.

Fast forward 12 years, the Italian - whose appointment was much derided at the start of the season - has gone down in Premier League and Foxes folklore by guiding Leicester to a dream title triumph.

"It is emotional. I hope my older fans are happy with me. Now I came back as a champion. It's a good story," he said.

"I have been to Stamford Bridge with Juventus in the Champions League but this time it is different because I am manager of Leicester, another English club."

Chelsea cannot finish any higher than ninth-place so their dreadful title defence is officially the worst in Premier League history.

To make matters worse, they'll have to give opponents Leicester a guard of honour onto the field at Stamford Bridge today.

    That's got to hurt.

The Foxes will be hoping their defence of the title next season goes significantly better.
