  1. Blues boss backing Burnleypublished at 19:43

Birmingham City v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett told Sky Sports: "I have a sense Burnley have got a slight advantage at the moment. I feel they're in the best shape. They're going to be in the best situation.

"I think it'll buck the trend this season and whichever side doesn't make it, will then go up in the play-offs.

"We've been disappointed with our last 10 games but I genuinely believe the players are going to put a big performance in."

  3. Dilemma for Diego?published at 19:40

Birmingham City v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

BBC Sport's Ged Scott at St Andrew's: "Diego Fabbrini could be in a dilemma tonight.

"As someone who scored seven goals in 26 appearances on loan to Middlesbrough earlier this season from Watford, he would be in line for a medal if Boro win the Championship title.

"But he has been a Birmingham City player since leaving Vicarage Road for St Andrew's in January.

"And, having so far rather disappointed for Blues, having still not found the target in 12 appearances (seven of them as sub), tonight would be a great night to light the royal blue touch paper...

"But it may not prove too easy against a Boro side who have conceded just 21 away goals in 22 Championship games this season.

"That is an away record matched only by two other clubs, leaders Burnley and Blues themselves."

  4. What about the hosts?published at 19:38

Birmingham City v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Middlesbrough's opponents tonight, Gary Rowett's Birmingham City, began the season in promising form and looked on course to at least challenge for a play-off spot, but have fallen off the pace at precisely the wrong time.

Just one win from their last 10 games has seen Birmingham drop out of the play-off picture.

There have been lots of positives for the Blues this season, but they've not kept things tight enough at the back, compared to the sides challenging for promotion, like Boro.

However, they did impress in a 0-0 draw at the Riverside in December.

The traffic hasn't been kind to the travelling Middlesbrough fans and some of them face a tall order to make it in time for kick-off.

Some 50-odd coaches set off for Birmingham from Teesside at 2.30pm, we understand, which some would say was cutting it a little bit fine, with such a long journey on a Friday.

Fingers crossed they make it soon as it does not sound likely that the match will be delayed.

Paul Addison, BBC Tees: "Middlesbrough never make it easy for themselves - it's just not part of the deal.

"Boro remain in a terrific position as the race for the Premier League goes down to the wire, but Burnley and Brighton keep on grinding out the results.

"Last season's play-off heartache is fresh in the minds of the Boro faithful, and a lot of fans I've spoken to fear a repeat of it if they miss out on a place in the top two.

"But the fact remains that if they win their last two they're up - and that's got to be the aim."

  8. Team newspublished at 19:27

Birmingham City v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Hosts Birmingham are without goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak (broken nose) but fears over a calf problem for right-back Paul Caddis have been eased, as he starts. The Blues also welcome back midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld.

However, Middlesbrough will have to make do without left-back George Friend, who has not been deemed fit enough to play.

Birmingham: Legzdins, Caddis, Morrison, Shotton, Grounds, Gleeson, Kieftenbeld, Davis, Cotterill, Fabbrini, Donaldson.

Subs: Trueman, Robinson, Vaughan, Solomon-Otabor, Spector, Lafferty, Buckley.

Middlesbrough: Dimi, Nsue, Ayala, Gibson, De Laet, Clayton, Leadbitter, Adomah, Ramirez, Downing, Rhodes.

Subs: Agazzi, Nugent, Forshaw, Kalas, Stuani, Husband, De Sart.

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka: "We are in an amazing position - I can't understand who could be pessimistic when we are almost at the top of the table.

"Two years ago we were playing to stay in the Championship. Now some people think to be in this position is a negative thing - I can't understand. Everybody has to be pleased with this team and these players."
