  1. Paul Cook sent to standspublished at 12 mins

    Portsmouth 1-1 Plymouth

Handbags on the sidelines. Portsmouth manager Paul Cook has been sent to the stands for his reaction after tangle between Danny Hollands and Jamille Matt. Plymouth coach Paul Wotton  has also been given his marching orders.

How does that change this match?

  2. goal

    Portsmouth 1-1 Plymouth

That lead didn't last long as Jamille Matt sends one end of Fratton Park into raptures. Gregg Wylde heads a deep cross back across the Portsmouth six-yard box, and Matt beats debutant keeper Ryan Allsop to the ball in the air.

I think it actually comes off Matt's shoulder and into the net. Not his best finish ever...

That strike was Marc McNulty's 12th of the season for Portsmouth since joining on loan from Sheffield United in November.

He almost gets on the end of a left-wing cross but Plymouth keeper Luke McCormick holds onto the ball.

"What a way to start this game and turn the amps all the way up to 11 inside this ground as Spinal Tap would've said.

"Portsmouth striker Marc McNulty wasn't going to waste the gift of a chance suddenly presented to him on the edge of the Plymouth area and suddenly Luke McCormick found himself stranded in the middle of the visitors' goal."

What a way to start this season's play-offs for Portsmouth!

Michael Doyle dispossesses a dawdling Plymouth centre-back Curtis Nelson in the middle of the park and plays it forward to Marc McNulty. The striker is given way too much space with Nelson out of position and fires in from outside of the box.

What do Portsmouth and Plymouth need to do to get promotion through the play-offs this season?

Well, Jay Freeman has trawled through the previous 26 years of the play-offs to tell them all the facts and stats so you don't have to... And you can read it here.

Both these sides started the season harboring hopes of automatic promotion from League Two, but the reality is they have both been off the pace and destined for the play-offs for some time.

Pompey have been no higher than fifth since a home defeat by Oxford United in mid-January while Argyle slipped out of the automatic places in late March, never to return.

One of the two best supported sides in the division will have to settle for at least another year at this level once this tie is settled.

    Portsmouth v Plymouth (19:45 BST)

Plymouth make six changes to the side which thumped Hartlepool 5-0 on the final day of the season.

Luke McCormick is back in goal for Argyle, Crystal Palace loanee Hiram Boateng returns to midfield, while Jamille Matt partners Jake Jervis up front.

Plymouth: McCormick, Mellor, Sawyer, McHugh, Nelson (capt), Hartley, Carey, Wylde, Jervis, Matt, Boateng.

Subs: Reid, Harvey, Purrington, Rooney, Tanner, Forster, Dorel

There'll be a shock in store for Plymouth boss Derek Adams when he looks at the Portsmouth teamsheet for tonight's match.

Pompey have signed goalkeeper Ryan Allsop on an emergency loan from Bournemouth as all their other three keepers are injured and starts in goal as one of seven changes to the side that lost to Northampton on Saturday.

Portsmouth: Allsop, Davies, Burgess, Barton, Stevens, Hollands, Doyle (capt), Evans, Roberts, Bennett, McNulty.

Substitutes: Whatmough, Haunstrup, Close, Tollitt, Naismith, McGurk, Wilkinson.

Yes it's an obvious one, but who can forget when Troy Deeney smashed home the goal to send Watford to Wembley in 2013 after Anthony Knockaert missed a penalty that would have sent Leicester to the Championship play-off final?

On the bench for Leicester that day; Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Danny Drinkwater. Wonder what happened to them?

The Pilgrims lost to Wycombe at this stage last season and were desperate to avoid the play-offs by winning promotion automatically this term.

Derek Adams' side had been in the top three as recently as March, but a run of two wins from eight saw them slip out and fail to return.

"We've got that bit of experience now," defender Carl McHugh said of last season's defeat. "The spine of the squad have played in the games last year and hopefully that'll help us."

Sorry Pompey fans. When you speak about Portsmouth, you have to look back at their recent history to get a bit of perspective.

Six years ago today the club were preparing for an FA Cup final against Chelsea. Flip forward to 2016 Pompey want a win tonight to put them on course to end their three-year stay in League Two.

Paul Cook has led them to their first top-seven finish since their drop to the division.

Unfortunately for Cook, if you look at the results from this match earlier this season, they have finished 2-1 to the visiting side on each occasion.

But this is the play-offs and anything can happen (cliche siren).
