No word from Derek McInnes yet, but you'll be able to read what he has to say about that performance on the website later.  His Dons side will likely face the Latvian side FK Ventspils, who still lead 2-0 on aggregate at half-time of their second leg against Vikingur of the Faroes Islands, in the second qualifying round. Either way, the first leg will be at Pittodrie next Thursday.  

Hearts will travel to Malta to face Birkirkara the same night, while Hibernian will host Danish side Brondby, who have cruised through 10-1 on aggregate. 

Before that we'll have Celtic's entrance to Champions League qualifying on Tuesday night in Gibraltar. 

A gimme for the Scottish champions?  After tonight, there would appear to be no easy games in Europe anymore.

There was a lot of hard work and endeavour but they needed a lot more than that. I felt the team they put out had plenty to trouble Fola, but it was the complete reverse.  It is difficult to put your finger on it. Last week the gulf in class was clear but tonight you wouldn't have known which was the part-time team."

Aberdeen have become the first team ever to lose a European tie to Fola Esch, despite progressing on aggregate. A little piece of unwanted history for the Dons. 

Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield on Radio Scotland: "The only positive Aberdeen can take is they are through to the next round. For the full 93 minutes, Fola were the better side. They had a game plan and they stuck to it. Only the woodwork and a great save from Joe Lewis has kept them in the competition.  You don't expect to see Aberdeen play as badly as that. They need to get back to the training ground and I'm sure Derek McInnes and his assistant Tony Docherty will dissect this and make sure they improve for the next one."

Tom Mather, Dundee: "How does Ash Taylor continue to get a game for Aberdeen? At fault for the goal, and he's been at fault for pretty much all Fola's chances. Derek McInnes must find a better alternative."

Gary Wilson, Aberdeen: "Aberdeen are quoted as saying they have been watching these new signings for some time? Who has been watching? Steve wonder? Aberdeen will be lucky to finish fourth next season. Still can't make my mind up who is part time here. What a joke, conned again for season tickets."   

Huge relief for Aberdeen.  They have squeezed through after a frankly woeful performance in Luxembourg, 3-2 on aggregate. 

We're into the first of three minutes of added time.  The Dons are effectively down to 10 men with Willo Flood a passenger.  

Fola have brought on another striker in Stefan Lopes. A worrying moment for Dons fans as Gerson Rodrigues puts in a dangerous ball into the box but Samir Hadji can only divert it into the arms of Joe Lewis.     

"It's all about Aberdeen using their experience now, trying to kill the game, rather than getting the ball down and playing," says former Dons defender Stuart Duff on Radio Scotland. The visitors haven't managed a shot on target in the second half.  Actually, not even a shot.

Adam Rooney goes down in the box, appealing for a penalty.  But the striker is fuming as the referee books him for diving instead. Frustration everywhere you look on Aberdeen faces.

Stefano Bensi has been a thorn in the Dons' side this evening, and he is allowed space for another effort from the edge of the area, but Joe Lewis is equal to it. 

Another chance for Fola, as a right-wing corss finds Gerson Rodrigues in space on the edge of the area. He pauses before trying a curling effort, but a deflection makes it an easy save for Joe Lewis.  "Aberdeen are giving them the freedom of Luxembourg," remarks BBC Scotland commentator Liam McLeod. 

Aberdeen dicing with death - or at least an ignominious exit - here.  An unmarked Emmanuel Francoise unleashes a right-foot shot that cracks against the base of Joe Lewis' left-hand post and away to safety.  

Ryan Klapp has departed for Fola, with Gerson Rodrigues on his place.  Willo Flood is barely able to move, but Aberdeen have used all their subs. A rare bright moment for the Dons in attack sees Jonny Hayes put in a cross from the right flank, but a defender nips in ahead of Adam Rooney.

Willo Flood is trying to change the momentum but he must have been close to a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Fola's Ryan Klapp, who has hobbled to the touchline.  Flood has managed to injure himself too in the process, and is struggling to run properly now.

There's still nearly half an hour to go but Derek McInnes make his third and final substitution.  Adam Rooney, the Dons top-scorer last season who is still on the comeback trail after a thigh injury kept him out of the final few months of the campaign, is on for Jayden Stockley.    

Aberdeen substitute Willo Flood picks up the first yellow card of the evening, for not giving the ball back to Fola after committing a foul. Hmm.

Former Aberdeen defender Stuart Duff on Radio Scotland: "It has been a bit of a stalemate in this second half.  It is a very scrappy game.  You can tell by Derek McInnes' mannerisms that he is furious with his team.  He is telling them to push up."

Much was made beforehand about Aberdeen's impressive record on their European travels under Derek McInnes, but this must be excruciating viewing for Dons fans. Remember, they are one goal away from going out of Europe...to a team of semi-professionals...before the season proper has even started.
