    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

Apparently we've heard that Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris suffered a hamstring injury in the first half. Not good, but you knew that.

I think the one thing that was glaringly obvious over the last couple of seasons at Everton was that they looked poor without the ball. Immediately you can tell the difference in the first half today as Everton returned to their shape quickly and hunted the ball.

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

Ronald Koeman's will be delighted with the scoreline and even more delighted with the display so far.

  5. GREAT SAVE!published at 45+1 mins

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

What great reactions for Michel Vorm.

Danny Rose plays a poor backpass to the Dutch keeper which is picked up by Gerard Deulofeu. Luckily Vorm reacts brilliantly and blocks the young Spaniard's shot.

That was great from the keeper who barely had time to ...er... Vorm up.. before coming on.

Everton look really organised and you can tell Ronald Koeman has been at work on them in pre-season. They look settled in their formation and you wonder how good they will look if the three or four new signings Koeman expects materialise.

Victor Wanyama once again bundles over Kevin Mirallas. The Tottenham midfielder gets another warning from ref Martin Atkinson who appears to be in a charitable mood for the moment.

Lloris going off changes everything for Tottenham as he has been quick off his line a few times. Maybe a re-think is in order now for Mauricio Pochettino.

  9. SHOCK SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 36 mins

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

    Strange one this.

Hugo Lloris didn't appear to be struggling, but he obviously was.

The France international gestures to the bench and comes off - he is replaced by Michel Vorm.

That's a substitution option taken away for Pochettino.

Tottenham's season may start when Mousa Dembele is available again.

With Dembele starting, Spurs lost just once in the Premier League last season but they lost five of nine games when he was absent.

  11. Jagielka outpaces Kanepublished at 34 mins

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

There is still life in the old man yet.

Jags and Harold Kane chase the ball down the left in the Everton third and the 33-year-old gets to the ball first.

    Great defending.

    In case you were wondering.

“Every question Tottenham are asking, Everton are answering. Tottenham are struggling to work the ball wide to get it into the box and Everton are finding it quite comfortable at the moment.”

James McCarthy is possibly a little lucky not to get a card after his boot said hello to Christian Eriksen's thigh. Free-kick to Spurs and nothing more.

Moments later, Dane Eriksen has Tottenham's first effort on target of the season when his shot from 20 yards drills into the mid-riff of Maarten Stekelenburg (also difficult to spell at speed).

  15. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

Koeman's Everton, reminiscent of Southampton, descend on Tottenham players with the ball like vultures eyeing a carcass.

Spurs are being suffocated for space. What's Plan B Mauricio?

Everton are really playing well at the moment. Looking good with the ball and without the ball.

  17. CLOSE and GOOD SAVE!published at 15 mins

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

    Crikey!

Ross Barkley teases in another good delivery that Phil Jagielka gets his head to. The defender's effort has to be tipped over the bar by Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham are finding it difficult to defend these aerial balls. Imagine if Everton had Lukaku on the field...imagine...imagine..

Victor Wanyama makes one his textbook tackles in taking out Kevin Mirallas.

Both fall to the deck but they get up only after Wanyama rolls around a bit. He gets a bit of a ticking off from ref Martin Atkinson.

    Everton have another free-kick.

“Harry Kane has had two great seasons but he had a difficult time at the Euros so I am looking to see how he responds. He could do with opening his account early.”

    Everton 1-0 Tottenham

Tottenham look for a quick response.

Christian Eriksen has a pop from 20 yards but his effort is blocked.

At the other end Gerard Deulofeu (tough to type out that surname at speed) cuts inside and fires a low shot that Hugo Lloris easily holds on to.
