    West Brom 1-0 Everton

Ramiro Funes Mori, playing as the left of three Everton centre-backs, has a moment of panic as Saido Berahino bears down the right channel on to a through pass. Berahino is clearly the quicker player - but spoils his chances of creating something by barging Funes Mori in the back.

Fascinating possession stats at The Hawthorns with half-an-hour gone. Proof that it's not about how much of the ball you have, it's what you do with it.

I wonder if there was a little bit of revenge on the mind of Saido Berahino, given that Gareth Barry committed an aggressive challenge on Claudio Yacob a few moments ago that went unpunished.

First booking of the contest. West Brom striker Saido Berahino goes in late on Gareth Barry - he is nowhere near the ball, instead catching his opponent on the ankle.

  6. Postpublished at 23 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Everton

Everton's best move so far. Gareth Barry starts it when Albion captain Darren Fletcher takes a loose touch and, several passes later, he is on the end of it when Leighton Baines plays a square ball to the edge of the penalty area. The shot rolls straight to an untroubled Ben Foster in the home goal, though.

    It's now sunny again.

  7. Postpublished at 20 mins

    West Brom 1-0 Everton

A lot of patient sideways passing from Everton as they seek an opening here, with the ball reaching Gerard Deulofeu, who is given absolutely no space to work in whatsoever by the Albion back line.

Then a longer ball is played up to Deulofeu, who believes he is having his shirt tugged by Jonas Olsson and goes to ground. Referee Neil Swarbrick gives nothing, while Olsson, who is 6ft 5in, squares up to Deulofeu, who is 5ft 9in. The words 'physical' and 'mismatch' spring to mind, as Angus Deayton might have once said.

The floodlights are on at The Hawthorns, even though it is a quarter past three on a Saturday afternoon in August. Summer has obviously gone.

    West Brom 1-0 Everton

So, a quarter-of-an-hour gone. Early impressions: West Brom are as dangerous from set-pieces as you would expect a Tony Pulis team to be. Everton's back three looks rather flimsy in the face of Albion's aerial power. Maarten Stekelenburg really is a fine shot-stopper.

In a television interview before the game, I asked Everton manager Ronald Koeman if he had made any special preparations for the threat of West Brom's set-pieces. He said: "No." I wonder if he's regretting that now.

Albion were almost in front seconds before that goal. Salomon Rondon had too much power for Ramiro Funes Mori, pulled down a long pass and blasted at goal - but Maarten Stekelenburg was off his line to block. It was but a temporary reprieve.

It's now hammering it down again, by the way.

    Gareth McAuley

West Brom's new owner Guochuan Lai looks pretty happy with life right now. And guess what? Tony Pulis' side have scored from a set-piece. Craig Gardner whips in a corner, and Gareth McAuley ghosts in at the far post to head in - something he's been doing for years.

The rain that was with us at kick-off has gone, and we've now got sunshine. Really changeable weather at The Hawthorns. It must be a nightmare for the cricket fans watching the Twenty20 finals at nearby Edgbaston.

    West Brom 0-0 Everton

A brief moment of concern for the visitors as Ross Barkley appears to pull up holding his hamstring after taking a tumble in a challenge by the touchline, but he's quickly up and about again.

  15. Postpublished at 4 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Everton

Everton having a decent spell of early pressure here. Gerard Deulofeu works a shot pass to Ross Barkley, who goes down amid a forest of Albion legs, though there are no serious appeals for a penalty.

  16. Postpublished at 3 mins

    West Brom 0-0 Everton

As predicted, Everton are sticking with the three-man central defence they deployed against Tottenham last weekend. That means midfielder James McCarthy continues out of position in a right-wing-back role, where he's likely to face the odd battle with West Brom's Jonny Evans, a centre-half playing out of position at left-back.

It is still early days for Everton under Ronald Koeman while he beds his new signings in, while West Brom are still trying to bring in new faces.

Both sides are a work in progress but I am expecting big things from Baggies striker Salomon Rondon in his second season in the Premier League.

As his manager Tony Pulis would say, Rondon has had a year to get used to English football. He is strong and quick, and a real threat.
