    The former Essex schoolteacher of West Ham, Chelsea and England footballer Frank Lampard has spoken of the midfielder's early development as a player.

    He made the comments following Lampard's decision to retire, announced yesterday, bringing to an end a 21-year professional career.  

    Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Chris Bouckley, former football master at the fee-paying Brentwood School which Lampard attended, said: "When he was eight or nine he was a good player, but did not stand out.

    "It was a football school so there were other children with talent. What was different with him was that he gave everything, whether it was cross-country running or swimming.

    "He always gave 110%."
