    Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

This might have started slowly but it's bubbling nicely with around 10 minutes of the first half remaining.

Sevilla are spraying the ball about nicely on the greasy surface however they are lacking a cutting edge as the rain continues to come down.

  2. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

Lovely passage of play for Sevilla as they look to get back into this.

Moments after Mariano wastes a glorious chance, former Reading player Daniel Carrico forces Kiko Casilla to beat away his fierce drive from outside the area.

Real might have the lead but they are living dangerously.

  5. CHANCEpublished at 27 mins

    Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

Sevilla are on the attack through Franco Vazquez who manages to deliver a lovely chipped cross to unmarked defender Mariano but the Brazilian goes for a spectacular volleyed finish - and gets it horribly wrong.

  6. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

Marco Asensio's goal has certainly livened things up.

Sevilla have reached the last three Super Cup finals and lost two of them. They are now trailing in another.

GOAL - Real Madrid 1-0 Sevillapublished at 21 mins

    Marco Asensio

Oh my word. What a stunning goal. Marco Asensio blasts Real Madrid into the lead with a long distance strike Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud to score.

Attacking midfielder Asensio is on the fringes of Real's first team but the 20-year-old is grasping his opportunity to impress in the absence of some senior players in Norway.

  8. EFL latestpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 9 August 2016

Not many goals around in the EFL Cup first round, but a couple of Championship clubs are behind to lower-league opposition.

As mentioned earlier, League One side Shrewsbury are 1-0 up against Huddersfield, while Cole Stockton has put League Two club Morecambe ahead at Rotherham.

No such worries for Nottingham Forest - whose manager Philippe Montanier says the EFL Cup may be their route into Europe this season. Forest lead 1-0 at Doncaster.

Walter Zenga's Wolves took an early lead against Crawley but Enzo Boldewijn, who went close with the match goalless, has levelled for the League Two side.

  9. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla

Sevilla's new Argentine boss Jorge Sampaoli is pacing the touchline and demanding more from his players. This is by no means a full-strength Real side but Sevilla have yet to seriously test keeper Kiko Casilla.

  10. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla

There's around 800 Real Madrid fans inside the Lerkendal Stadion - most of them wearing waterproofs. The venue holds around 21,000 but it is not quite full.

Chances have been few and far between in the opening exchanges but Zinedine Zidane will be satisfied with the lively start his Real Madrid players have made.

  11. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla

It's already clear that Real Madrid are up for this. Marco Asensio delivers a fine cross into the Sevilla area which is just about cleared by Mariano before Asensio, involved once again, lets fly drive from just outside the box. Sergio Rico is equal to the effort.

  12. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla

Zinedine Zidane's side have started with real intent, with Isco charging into the Sevilla area before catching Vicente Iborra, who goes down in a heap. The game is halted while Iborra gets treatment.

  13. EFL Cup latestpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 9 August 2016

An early goal in the EFL Cup with Ajay Leitch-Smith putting Shrewsbury ahead against Championship Huddersfield. Upset on the cards?

With 30 ties we obviously won't be mentioning every goal tonight - but we will endeavour to keep you across the most significant action.

  14. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Sevilla

Sevilla are playing in red while Real Madrid are all in white. Both sets of players already look drenched. This game is taking place 200 miles from the Arctic Circle and it's pouring down with rain.

Can you believe it? The Super Cup gets it's very own opening ceremony. It's nothing like on the same scale as the one which opened the 2016 Olympics but there's plenty of dancing on the pitch at the Lerkendal Stadion - despite the rain.

Could one of the night's biggest EFL Cup shocks come at Cambridge United?

The League Two club entertain Sheffield Wednesday, who came within one game of promotion to the Premier League last season only to lose the Championship play-off final to Hull.

"We're looking forward to welcoming a team that was very close to the Premier League last season," said Cambridge boss Shaun Derry. "We're confident and comfortable that we've got a squad that can give them a game."

We'll bring you updates from the EFL Cup throughout the evening.
