West Ham manager Slaven Bilic on the news Andre Ayew will be out for four months through injury: "It is not good and he needs surgery. Four months is a big, big blow for us but he’ll be back. If he’s a good healer he can be back before Christmas. We have to cope with it. There’s no point moaning about it."

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic on debutant Jonathan Calleri: "I played and managed in these kind of atmosphere, it is hard for them to get used to non-Premier League environments. 

"It was hard for him but he had a great chance and the goalkeeper made a good save. He showed a glimpse of his quality. He can be good in the link-up play and we are expecting a lot of him."

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "It is a shame, but it is a good result. A couple of minutes before the goal we had a good counter with Marcus Browne but unfortunately we missed the target. Instead of 2-0, and probably killing the game, they get a corner and score.

"We hope we will win the second leg but this was a mixed side with senior and youngsters, it is a good result. We played with some young kids and it was a great experience for them.

"We only wanted to rest two or three players but the rest are out because they could not play."

West Ham skipper Mark Noble: "It is another late goal, just like Monday night [against Chelsea]. We have another game, we have an away goal but a massive game on Sunday against Bournemouth. We need to get a couple of players back.

"This is the first week of the season and we travelled a long way, we should have held on. I am pretty sure the second game will be a good one.

"We didn't score from open play tonight, we have to score and win games.

"It is not ideal if you fly for three hours then drive an hour-and-a-half to a game and don't come away with a result."

There goes the final whistle. Astra clicked into gear late on, but West Ham take an away goal back to London for next week's return leg.

Astra make their last change deep into injury time.

Filipe Teixeira makes his way off the pitch, while Silviu Balaure comes on.

He should be sent off straight away, he's got number 96 on his shirt.

Into the last minute, is there a final chance in this match?

Another cross from the right, this time from Daniel Niculae, but James Collins gets it away.

Brilliant play from Cristian Sapunaru to flash a cross across the six-yard box, but no Astra player is there to tap the ball in.

That would have been the winner. It's been all Astra since the second goal.

Michail Antonio gives his shin a rub and gets up to a yellow card from the referee.

Painful, this one is painful.

Astra defender Gerardo Alves comes across to clear the ball and Michail Antonio runs in to catch him on the leg.

Shin on shin clatter, a sound that echoes around the stadium. Nasty.

No communication between West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph and defender James Collins, who heads the ball away for a corner when the keeps had an easy catch.

Luckily for the Hammers, it's a poor corner from the home side.

Two minutes to play.

Goalscorer Denis Alibec was booked for his over-exuberant celebration.

A change from Astra. The impressive Alexandru Ionita comes off to applause from his manager and on comes Constantin Flores.

Five minutes left.

Oh dear, West Ham should have put this tie to bed.

Sub Marcus Browne leaves the Astra defence trailing with a superb run forward. He's one-on-one with the goalkeeper and elects to roll the ball across to Michail Antonio.

It looks for all the world that the Hammers winger is going to slip the ball into an open net, but instead whacks it into the side netting.

A glorious chance missed. Unselfish play from Browne, but he should have gone himself.

Now there is a booking.

Reece Oxford comes across to the right and chops down Denis Alibec, for which he gets a yellow, but the home side are unable to make their opportunity count.
