Patrick van Aanholt scores a late equaliser for Sunderland - but they remain in the relegation zone after drawing with West Brom.

Jermain Defoe's free-kick is the last kick of the match. Sunderland stop a run a three successive defeats. 

Jonny Evans penalised. One last chance for the Black Cats? Jermain Defoe takes aim and his free-kick is just a fraction wide. 

Jason Denayer looks to be in trouble, flat on his back on the ground. He manages to get up, but is covering his face with his shirt and is hobbling off the pitch. He seems to have hurt his eye after colliding in the air with Craig Dawson. 

Five minutes added to the full 90 minutes so there is time for a winning striker. 

Sunderland with possession in their own half before Didier Ndong skips past substitute James Morrison. His cross fails to find a team-mate, but at least the Black Cats have halted West Brom's momentum. 

It's all West Brom. A lovely inswinger from Matt Phillips towards Salomón Rondón, but the striker heads high. Sunderland off the hook. 

Worryingly for the hosts, West Brom are being given plenty of space to run into. Pressure increasing on the home defence and only a fine block tackle from John O'Shea stops Salomón Rondón from taking aim from two yards out.

An incredible assist from Duncan Watmore. I don't know how he manages to get the ball back at that angle. It's an unbelievable piece of skill. Sunderland have deserved it. They have been positive in the second half. But almost immediately after getting back into the game they almost allow West Brom to score again.

In the next attack, West Brom go close - Matt Phillips wide from close range in what would have been a killer blow to this late Sunderland revival. 

Jordan Pickford comes out of his box, nervous times for the Sunderland defence... Salomón Rondon is chasing the ball but the Sunderland goalie manages to boot the ball away before the Baggies striker can cause any real havoc. 

Jason Denayer gallops forward but his final ball is disappointing and that is the story of this half for Sunderland. The hosts are trying to find the equaliser but are lacking poise when it matters. 

A long ball finds Salomón Rondón, who shoots from wide right - Jordan Pickford's body keeps the ball away from the net. Perhaps the Baggies striker would have been better placed passing to Matt Phillips but he only had eye for the goal. 

James McClean is the player sacrificed as Tony Pulis brings on Craig Gardner. Warm applause for former Black Cat Gardner. Not quite as pleasant a cheerio for McClean. 

Oof! Another chance for Jermain Defoe as Sunderland counter attack, but Jonny Evans blocks the striker's 12-yard shot. At the other end of the pitch, Salomón Rondon has a sniff but he chips his effort far too high.   

Sunderland not giving the impression they can fight their way back into this match. West Brom are canny, content to pass the ball back when necessary, and organised. Sunderland enjoying plenty of possession in the middle of the park but lacking bite in the final third. 

A tired-looking crossfield ball from Wahbi Khazri is picked out by James McClean and the Baggies wideman has acres to run at. Sunderland on their heels once again... West Brom happy to sit back and attack on the counter. 

Darren Fletcher aims from distance but though it is well-struck attempt, it heads straight at Jordan Pickford. But the goalkeeper is unable to keep hold of the ball and next Nacer Chadli has a chance, but his shot is wide, wide, wide. Sunderland's defence breathing a sigh of relief as they watch on.
