Patrick van Aanholt replaces Jan Kirchhoff who seems to land awkwardly after a challenge with Nyom. 

Angry exchange of words between Jan Kirchhoff and Duncan Watmore as the midfielder chooses to pass to his team-mate instead of shooting at goal. The fans think Kirchoff should have taken aim as Watmore was clearly offside. 

It's a torrid few minutes for Kirchhoff as he is now on the turf, receiving treatment and it seems as if his afternoon is done.

Wahbi Khazri wins the ball from Darren Fletcher in the opposition half and Sunderland hopes are heightened once again, but the hosts can't capitalise on Khazri's tenacity and a loose pass from Jan Kirchhoff goes out for a goal kick. 

Sunderland monopolising the ball in the early stages of the second half, but West Brom's defence remains solid. Wahbi Khazri picks out Jermain Defoe who turns adroitly before running into three West Brom defenders. It is a move which gives the home fans something to cheer. 

The familiar sight of Duncan Watmore bouncing off defenders, barging down the left. He passes to Paddy McNair who disappointingly boots the ball towards the opposite side of the pitch and out of play. 

The players return to the pitch. Jermain Defoe is talking to the assistant referee as they both emerge from the tunnel. Can Sunderland turn this one around? Defeat against West Brom would equal the worst start to a season in Premier League history.

And that is the end of that half. How costly will Jermain Defoe's miss prove to be? 

Nacer Chadli hobbling but remains on the pitch and doesn't receive treatment. The half ending with Sunderland in possession but unable to test the West Brom defence.

I think David Moyes is a good manager. Has he got the tools to work with at the moment at Sunderland? Probably not. If you do go down you have to keep hold of them.

Sunderland's defence is like a sieve at the moment. They are just leaking goals, but they have been poor there for many years. You look at their games and wonder, where are they going to get points from?

When you have got Jermain Defoe going through one-on-one, like he has today, you expect him to score. You know your luck is out when one of the top strikers around is missing chances.

Just three minutes or so until half-time and it seems like Sunderland will be heading to the break a goal down. It could have been 2-0, but James McClean's attempt to set up Salomón Rondon for a strike at goal ends with a pass that runs out for a goal kick. 

That goal was a dagger to the heart for the singing Sunderland fans. The Black Cats have been the better team, but with a goal in the bag West Brom are beginning to play with more swagger. Their passing is crisper, possession more secure.

Nacer Chadli relieves a lot of pressure with his pace and his physicality. He's got real quality and it's a great finish. What he gives his pace and you can see why Tony Pulis went out and paid what he did for him. Yes, it's bad defensively from Sunderland but you have to give Chadli credit as well. He didn't give Jordan Pickford a chance with the finish.

Sunderland fans raise their voices, encouraging their team forward. It is the Black Cats who are continuing to enjoy the majority of possession and the impressive Duncan Watmore earns his team another free-kick for a Darren Fletcher foul. 

The hosts take it short, but Watmore, in an attempt to find Defoe, ruins the move, passing to no one and the ball goes out for a goal kick.

David Moyes is talking to his coaching team on the sidelines. The Scot must be pleased with the way his team are performing so far. Claudio Jacob concedes a free-kick for a beefy challenge on Wahbi Khazri and Sunderland go again. 

They spray the ball around nicely in the middle of the park... from right to left... Duncan Watmore and Craig Dawson shoulder to shoulder down the flank, the Black Cats winger thinks he's got the better of Dawson but the referee deems the young forward was a touch too physical. 

West Brom are being starved of possession, but Darren Fletcher drives into the box on a rare attack, cuts back into the box and it bounces away for another corner - the visitors' third of the match. It is Jan Kirchhoff who heads the ball away this time. 

A dreadful header from Nyom in his own half finds Wahbi Khazri and the Black Cats end up with another corner. Lamine Kone leaps above the rest at the far post, but the defender can't quite make contact. 

As this graphic shows, Sunderland are dominating possession and are spending quite a bit of time in the opposition third. Two successive corners come to nothing from the Black Cats, but if they continue in this form then they will, sooner or later, score. West Brom currently being stifled.
