Jamie Vardy, Leicester's top scorer, watches on from the sidelines as Islam Slimani and Andy King create pretty patterns, advancing their team forward and earning a corner. Palace fail to instantly deal with Christian Fuchs' inswinger... Robert Huth has a swing which is blocked and eventually Steve Mandanda gathers.

A cute ball from Shinji Okazaki to Islam Slimani as Leicester attack, but the latter is caught offside.

Moments later Steve Mandanda - the original sweeper-keeper some would say - passes straight at Okazaki. Decibels rise inside the stadium, but the forward is way off target. Mandanda is left hitting his temples.

If Leicester City finish seventh or eighth in the Premier League this season, that's a fantastic result.

They are doing well in the Champions League and they don't really have the squad to compete in both.

After all the investment of the teams around and above them, I think we have to accept last season was exceptional, we have to realise it's unlikely to ever happen again, and they are about where they should be.

The players walk out to the familiar sound of the tuneful bugler, one of the simplest brass instruments but no less pleasing on the ears.

Leicester's team pose before a framed picture of the recently deceased King of Thailand and there will now be a minute's applause in memory of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Former Wales striker Dean Saunders: "I thought Vardy and Mahrez would leave this summer. It has been difficult this season, teams have worked them out.

"Teams are playing a different formations to stop Mahrez getting the ball and he is missing Kante, without his interceptions it stops Mahrez's supply of the ball."

Are Leicester right to prioritise the Champions League?

Ex Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson: "It is absolutely understandable. They will be fine in the Premier League, they were never going to win it again, the top teams have improved ans have new managers. Leicester are quite right to go for Champions League. If they get another point they have qualified what a story."

A quick line on Palace first: not great last week but otherwise doing just fine. Only one defeat in six games, top half, thank you very much.

Now to Leicester, for whom the famous phrase 'lies, damned lies, and statistics' might apply.

Sure, the Premier League numbers aren't great and they're not where they'd want to be, but their Champions League exploits show that there isn't too much tinkering to be done to get things right again.

Keep reading and you'll see the line about this being the worst start by defending champions since Leeds in 1974. That side soon picked up though, AND went on to reach the European Cup final.

    Just saying…

The big question of the day is: Which Leicester City will turn up this afternoon? The all-conquering European side or the below-par Premier League team? It's difficult dining with Europe's elite and maintaining Premier League form, as Claudio Ranieri's men have illustrated so far this season.

But defeat for the Foxes today would represent the worst start after nine games by a defending top-flight champion since 1974 when Leeds United won two, drew two and lost five.
