Gerard Pique stands moodily at the mouth of the San Mames tunnel, one half of his face lit by the glow of the floodlights beyond, the other cast into shadow.

    Top marks for accidental cinematography.

The two teams are divided by a fence in the tunnel - all a bit Gladiator - but everyone is friends when it comes to the pre-match hand slaps.

    Kick-off next.

Are they that particular about their shampoo that they can't let it out of their sight?

Athletic Bilbao finished fifth in La Liga last season with a team of that contains 22-year-old silky centre-half Aymeric Laporte and, at the other end of the age scale, the evergreen 35-year-old Aritz Aduriz, who scored 20 goals in 34 league games.

They have not had the best start to this campaign however, losing their league opener 2-1 away to Sporting Gijon.

The classes of 2016 have better behaviour.

    And better football as well.

Barcelona may be without Neymar - who is remaining in Brazil until after the international break as he recovers from his Olympic campaign with his nation - but their scalpel-sharp attack was in full effect in their league opener.

Luis Suarez scored three and Lionel Messi two in a 6-2 win over Real Betis.

With Barcelona cruising at 4-0 up in front of 120,000 ole-ing home fans at the Nou Camp, Maradona receives the ball with his back to goal in midfield.

Even given his talent, it is not a dangerous situation for the Basque visitors. Maradona has no reason to expect a challenge and is not braced for one.

But a frustrated Goikoetxea has tracked him all the way and launches himself at the Argentine studs up, sending him crumpling to earth., external

Maradona said that the sound of his ankle breaking was like snapping wood.

Goikoetxea is alleged to have kept his boot from the game on display as a bit of a conservation piece at his house.

    September 1983.

Diego Maradona is the most expensive player in the world, having arrived at Barcelona from Boca Juniors for £3m the previous year.

Andoni Goikoetxea is defending La Liga champions Athletic Bilbao's enforcer. Two seasons earlier he had seriously injured Barca's star midfielder Bernd Schuster's knee with a reckless hack at the German's knee.

What followed was one of the most infamous fouls in football history.
