  5. Scots hope to avoid false startpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

Malta v Scotland, Sunday 4 September (KO 19:45)

    Richard Wilson
    BBC Scotland

Scotland begin their World Cup qualifying campaign away to Malta on Sunday. The importance of making a positive start to the campaign was emphasised during the Euro 2016 qualifiers, when Northern Ireland began with three straight wins on their way to winning Group F.

The Scots' recent record in the opening games of qualifying tournaments is not encouraging, though. Since they last reached the finals of a major competition – France 98 – Scotland have played in nine qualifying groups and won only two of their opening matches. Here is the playing record and the results:

    P 9          W 2         D 5          L 2           GF 10      GA 5

    Euro 2000 qualifying – Lithuania 0-0 Scotland

World Cup 2002 qualifying – Latvia 0-1 Scotland

Euro 2004 qualifying – Faroe Islands 2-2 Scotland

World Cup 2006 qualifying – Scotland 0-0 Slovenia

Euro 2008 qualifying – Scotland 6-0 Faroe Islands

World Cup 2010 qualifying – Macedonia 1-0 Scotland

    Euro 2012 qualifying – Lithuania 0-0 Scotland

World Cup 2014 qualifying – Scotland 0-0 Serbia

    Euro 2016 qualifying – Germany 2-1 Scotland
