"This has been a very encouraging opening half-hour from the Scots in Reykjavik.

"Not only have they scored the first goal Iceland have conceded in the entire campaign but they have restricted the home side to just one shot on target, that from a free-kick. Anna Signeul will be thrilled. Long way to go though."

"It's been an impressive start by the visiting Scots. They look the more threatening team and should probably have scored through Jane Ross.

"They are more than matching the group leaders Iceland, perhaps buoyed by the confidence of already having qualified."

"Anna Signeul brought her Scotland squad to Iceland as history-makers but they are very keen to end this qualification campaign on a high.

"The 4-0 home defeat by today's opponents still rankles and Signeul is eager they produce a vastly improved performance on an evening not unlike a late autumn night in Scotland - wet, cold and overcast.

"Joelle Murray makes her first competitive start for the Scots at the heart of the defence in place of the injured Ifeoma Dieke."

  16. A question of confidencepublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 20 September 2016

Stewart Gilmour, the former St Mirren chairman, was on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme last night, discussing the sacking of Alex Rae and his assistant.

He said: "It is always disappointing at any time that guys lose their job. I know how hard Alex Rae and David Farrell work. It is a really difficult task. Sometimes I wonder why guys want to be managers of football clubs. The only thing you know when you take over is that one day you are going to be sacked.

"Alex took over in a very similar position to what we are in just now where he had to be very workmanlike.

"We've had a tough start and, watching the team, the guys have lost confidence in themselves. I don't think it is so much about managers. At the moment, it is about the St Mirren players. They have to look at themselves and think how responsibility do I have.

"I would have given Alex and David more time to try to get it round, but I would probably have been criticised for it. It is a difficult one about whether you do it quickly or let it run.

"Whoever comes in, it is going to be hard job for them, but I hope whoever comes in they are hugely successful and there will be plenty looking to take the job on. I don't think we've got a bad squad of players. I think they have got to get their confidence back."
