It's all Fernandinho here! He's really in the mood. Now he lines up a long range shot that's never really going to trouble Valdes, but you can't fault his confidence.

De Bruyne it is.. Deflected by the wall for a corner, which is eventually gathered by Victor Valdes.

    Not much doing so far.

Fernandinho's started really well. He juggles the ball beyond Marten de Roon on the edge of the Boro box and the Belgian midfielder takes him out.

Free-kick. In Aleksandar Kolarov or Kevin de Bruyne range?

Such good play from Fernandinho. He waltzes past Adam Clayton in the Boro midfield, slices a pass through the back lines towards Kevin de Bruyne, but the away side are not to be beaten easily.

They scramble men behind the ball and soak up the pressure again and again as City look for the opening.

Alvaro Negredo's not having much joy up against John Stones so far.

But George Friend smashes through Jesus Navas to knock the ball out for a throw down the City right. Great challenge.

Pep Guardiola has gone for a long black coat with a hood today.

    No hat though. Or gloves.

He looks as though he might be a little bit cold.

Manchester City love to be on the front foot, pass the ball and have a lot of movement.

You may see Middlesbrough say 'we'll park the bus and catch you on the break'.

They've got pace and can hurt you. I've not seen a faster player in the Premier League than Adama Traore and he can be a real threat today.

City are playing like a side who know they can afford to be patient with the ball. They're going to be having plenty of it this afternoon as Boro settle into their lines.

Adama Traore's confidence has not been knocked by giving the ball away in the first few minutes. Here he is weaving past three sky blue shirts as Aitor Karanka's side struggle to string passes together when they do get it.

John Stones swerves past a bit of Boro pressure on the edge of his own box and City play it patiently up the field.

As Boro win it back, Adama Traore is sloppy in possession and City force a corner...

Cleared away but not the best of starts for the away side.

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka on Guardiola: "I said that with Pep here the league was going to improve, and he's showing how good he is.

"Now we have to play against them but we must focus on ourselves. We played well against Arsenal but now we have to go to the Etihad expecting a tough game as Man City are an amazing team."

On Tuesday, the Etihad Stadium played host to one of Manchester City's greatest nights; their first ever win against Barcelona.

The memories of City's 3-1 triumph will last a long time.

But in his programme notes today, manager Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning.

"Really good sides, the best sides are consistent winners and have the mentality of consistent winners."

In other words, Tuesday was great but do not let standards slip against Middlesbrough this afternoon.

How do Manchester City follow that?! The simple answer is 'by beating Boro handsomely', but the Teessiders' improved form suggests that it won't be that easy.

Aitor Karanka's team have looked much better going forward in their last two games, partly due to the selection of the lively, if unpredictable, former Barcelona junior Adama Traore.

Having seen what City did to the fully-fledged Barca though, being so adventurous again might not be Boro's best bet.

As Jose Mourinho's assistant at Real Madrid, Karanka only got the better of Pep Guardiola twice in 11 El Clasico clashes. It would be the upset of the Premier League season so far if he manages it here.

A couple of games ago we were talking about it being the toughest period for Pep Guardiola after some very poor performances. The last two games have turned it around. That is all it can take some times.
