Joey Barton has asked for extra time to consider his Scottish Football Association charge of allegedly breaking strict betting rules, Press Association Sport reports.

The Rangers midfielder was given until today to respond after he was charged with placing 44 bets on games between 1 July 1 and 15 September this year. 

But now he has requested an extension to that deadline, saying he needs longer to look through the paperwork detailing the case against him. 

The request is expected to be considered by the Scottish FA's judicial panel on Thursday. 

SFA rules ban players from from betting on any football match, anywhere in the world. 

Barton was due to return to training earlier this week after serving a month-long club suspension following an internal dispute but Rangers announced on Sunday they had told him to stay away from both Ibrox and their Auchenhowie training base for another seven days after launching a "formal disciplinary procedure".

Removing manager Gordon Strachan would do nothing to solve Scotland's troubles, insists Rangers boss Mark Warburton.

Strachan's future is under scrutiny after a poor start to the World Cup qualifying campaign.

But Warburton thinks the main problem lies with young players not being tested enough during their development.

"We need to look at far deeper issues," he said. You need to offer a quality of challenge to a young player that they are not currently being faced with. I look at the national team and read the papers today. I see a very experienced manager, a very experienced coach. His credentials are there for all to see, so it's not about changing managers - it's about looking at the bigger picture. 

"There is a lot of young talent in Scotland. We need to give them a chance to be the best we can be."

Hibernian Ladies are away to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League this evening.

The Scottish part-timers are highly unlikely to turn around a 6-0 deficit from the first leg but should benefit from the experience of another 90 minutes against the champions of Germany. It's also a chance to impress any watching scouts.

The second leg of the round of 32 match kicks off at 17:00 BST.

Hearts' plans to redevelop the main stand at Tynecastle have been approved by Edinburgh City Council.

Work on the £11m project, which will increase the ground's overall capacity to more than 20,000, is scheduled to begin next month.

The redevelopment programme is due for completion in September 2017.

Hearts owner Ann Budge said last month that she expects the current 17,400 capacity to be unaffected while the work takes place.

"Inevitably there will be a bit of disruption because it is a big building programme but we absolutely keep that to a minimum and the supporters who still want to come and sit in the old stand will do so," she added.

Q: What's the atmosphere like at a Scottish top-flight club the morning after a disappointing Scotland result?

Martin Canning: "I don't think it changes the atmosphere in terms of us going about our business. Obviously the boys came in and they talk about it and they want Scotland to do well."

Q: Surely it's disappointing to take one point from six when some were hoping for six from six?

MC: "Scottish fans want to see the national team winning games. We know it's not always easy. You can look at teams on paper and say we should be beating them but these teams have got good players as well. Slovakia had Marek Hamsik and Martin Skrtel."

Q: Players to blame? Manager to blame? Change of manager required?

MC: "I don't think you can say the manager is to blame or the players are to blame. It's just sometimes you need to regroup and go again. I don't think it's always the answer to look to replace people and blame people. You've got to stick together as a country. It's your national team and we've all got to get behind them."

Former Scotland midfielder John Collins added: "I certainly hope Gordon stays on.

"The SFA appointed Gordon, they have given him a contract and the race isn't finished at the halfway stage. The prizes are not given out just now.  There are still a lot of games to be played and a lot of points to be gathered.

"Things can turn around quickly in football. We live in hope and I just hope that Gordon and his coaching team is still there and we can surprise England and get ourselves back into the group."
