    Burnley 0-0 Middlesbrough

Burnley are enjoying a good spell here.

Jon Flanagan's lofted free-kick found Ashley Barnes unmarked in the area but the striker was slightly on the stretch and his attempt to steer the ball across the face of goal came to nothing.

Moments later the lively George Boyd beat his man and sent over a cross that was cleared for a corner.

Another half-chance for the hosts as George Boyd lets fly from from a free-kick from around 25 yards.

The effort was straight at Victor Valdes but it was clearly moving in the air as the goalkeeper made a real meal of the save.

    But save it he did.

I thought it was a penalty because Chambers' hand is up above his head.

    A let-off for Middlesbrough there?

It was all a bit scrappy inside the Middlesbrough area as Ashley Barnes and Dean Marney tried to bundle the ball home after good work by George Boyd down the right.

The ball was pinging around and Marney's scuffed shot struck the elbow area of Calum Chambers, who did appear to move his arm towards the ball.

A tricky one for the referee but - as the old saying goes - I've seen them given.

Burnley's George Boyd is the second player in the referee's notebook for a foul on Adam Forshaw.

  12. CLOSE!published at 11 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Middlesbrough

Burnley are so very nearly undone by a simple ball over the top.

Antonio Barragan's drilled forward pass was latched on to by Cristhian Stuani with the home defenders AWOL, but the returning striker fails to get his effort from the edge of the area on target.

There's some scuffling on the edge of the box and Scott Arfield gets half a foot on the ball, but it trickles towards Boro keeper Victor Valdes.

An early sniff for Middlesbrough as Fabio curls a ball in towards Alvaro Negredo in the box, but Tom Heaton comes out and catches it safely.

Ooh, that's nasty. A late challenge from Marten de Roon catches Stephen Ward's kneecap, and he's been shown a yellow.

It's what Boxing Day is all about - donning a Santa hat and sitting in the cold at the footy. A solid effort from this couple.

It's by no means a local derby, yet the meeting of Burnley and Middlesbrough has evolved to become a highly competitive duel. Stoked up by off-field comments, external and budgetary comparisons, the two have now become unlikely adversaries with their many recent meetings in the Championship pivotal, as each has sought to scupper the other's quest for promotion.

Having both achieved that aim in May, they're now acutely aware of the importance of beating each other, in their battle to remain among the game's elite.
