What a day for Burnley and what a day for Andre Gray.

Certainly one to remember for him, and one to forget for David Moyes and anyone connected with Sunderland.

Thanks for joining us and bye for now.

    Burnley 4-1 Sunderland

And it is all over. Sunderland were absolutely awful, but the day belongs to Burnley and Andre Gray.

He becomes the first Clarets player to score a Premier League hat-trick as they recorded a comfortable victory.

    Burnley 4-1 Sunderland

Where do Sunderland go from here? Well, a home game against Liverpool, the top goalscorers in the league, is next up on 2 January.

If the Black Cats defending is anything like today then it will be a long day for Sunderland fans.

  4. Postpublished at 85 mins

    Burnley 4-1 Sunderland

No sign of that fightback just yet. Sunderland's Seb Larsson has just had an effort from 20 yards, that went almost the same distance over the top.

  5. Postpublished at 82 mins

    Burnley 4-1 Sunderland

Eight minutes left for what would be one of the greatest comebacks all time. Maybe.

Seb Larsson has just wasted a free-kick and Jermain Defoe has had an effort blocked.

Robbie Edwards: I'm slowly losing faith in Sunderland. With no money to spend in January relegation looks a formality now.

Hat-trick hero Andre Gray goes off to a standing ovation from the home fans. He goes off for Sam Vokes.

    Jermain Defoe (Sunderland)

If Sunderland are to have any chance of staying up then they just have to keep hold of Jermain Defoe.

The striker has just scored his ninth goal of the season, out of Sunderland's Premier League total of 17.

It is a well-crafted goal too as Adnan Januzaj leads the charge forward and dinks in a pass to the back post that evades the head of Ben Mee.

Defoe takes a touch to set himself and shoots from close range past Tom Heaton. The complete lack of any celebration is so telling though.

Johnny Magrinho: Sunderland have been spoiled with Pickford's stoic performances - the next 6-8 weeks without him will be long & unforgiving.

    Ashley Barnes (penalty)

A calm penalty from Ashley Barnes, who rolls the ball into the bottom corner.

That is 4-0 on a hugely embarrassing day for anyone connected with Sunderland.

  11. PENALTY to Burnleypublished at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

    Burnley 3-0 Sunderland

This could be 4-0. The horrow show for David Moyes continues. It is an awful, clumsy challenge from Seb Larsson which bundles Scott Arfield to the floor in the penalty area.

The referee points to the spot and Ashley Barnes gets ready.

Four years ago Andre Gray was playing in the sixth tier of English football with Hinckley United.

Today he has scored a Premier League hat-trick.

    Burnley 3-0 Sunderland

More awful defending from the visitors, who have looked embarrassing at the back since the first-half injury to centre-half Lamine Kone.

This time the ball falls to Burnley's Scott Arfield, unmarked, in the penalty area. He should do more then shoot tamely at Vito Mannone.

  15. 'Sunderland's defence has not turned up'published at 55 mins

    Trevor Sinclair
Ex-Man City & West Ham winger on Final Score

    Talking about Burnley's second goal.

I think that's the reason Vito Mannone's not still at Arsenal - he can stop a shot but his decision making is awful.

Sunderland's defence hasn't turned up today, you could have driven a double-decker bus through their defence just then.

    Andre Gray (Burnley, hat-trick)

What a day for Andre Gray. He holds the match ball aloft after grabbing a Premier League hat-trick.

It is more embarrassment for Sunderland. Substitute Steven Pienaar stands on the ball and that allows Burnley to hit what should be a routine ball into the middle of the Sunderland defence.

But Ashley Barnes has time and space to slot in a pass to Gray, who steers his shot past Vito Mannone into the bottom corner.

That is three for Gray, and three points for Burnley.

  17. 'A huge result for Burnley if it stays the same'published at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

    Burnley 2-0 Sunderland

    Alex Bruce
Hull City defender on Final Score

Why has Vito Mannone come so far out? He made Gray's mind up for him, making it easy for him to skip past him and finish with ease.

This is a huge result for Burnley if it stays the same.

  18. goal

    Andre Gray (Burnley)

More terrible defending and Andre Gray capitalises for his second goal of the game.

A speculative ball is hit forward and Gray, who holds off a challenge from Papy Dijobodji, gets to the ball before Vito Mannone.

The Italian goalkeeper had sprinted out of his penalty area, but is caught out and Gray takes the ball round Mannone and puts it into an empty net.

  19. GREAT SAVE!published at 48 mins

    Burnley 1-0 Sunderland

What a chance for 2-0. Andre Gray again bursts through the middle of the Sunderland defence and is only denied by an excellent save from Vito Mannone.

The follow-up falls to Ashley Barnes but an excellent block from Papy Dijobodji keeps the ball out of the net. An assistant's flag was then raised when Barnes got the ball, although no-one is too sure why. But it didn't go in anyway so now arguments.
