Alongside Hull, this is the lowest number of goals scored by a Premier League team this term.

Middlesbrough have gone to Arsenal and Manchester City and given them both a really good game before leaving with a point.

Boro will not change their defensive game-plan at Old Trafford but Manchester United are probably the most improved team in the Premier League in the past few weeks.

Boss Jose Mourinho has found a system that works and, no matter what Boro do, I think they will find a way through.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The Swede has been involved in 14 Premier League goals this season (12 goals, two assists) - eight more than any other Manchester United player.

He needs just two more to overtake Lionel Messi and become Europe's leading goalscorer for 2016.

    Can he do it?

There has not always been harmony between the dug-outs when these two sides have met.

In 2006, then Boro boss Gareth Southgate labelled Cristiano Ronaldo "a diver" after one Old Trafford encounter that had not gone his way, an observation it is fair to say Sir Alex Ferguson was not in agreement with.

There won't be any issues for fourth official Neil Swarbrick today.

Not only are Jose Mourinho and Aitor Karanka close friends and worked together at Real Madrid, the cousin of United assistant boss Rui Faria holds a similar position at Boro.

"We are all really big friends. I am not sure if we will be hugging or fighting before the match," said Mourinho in his programme notes.

Jose Mourinho rings the changes for Manchester United, with five in all from the side that beat Sunderland last time out. Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly are the preferred central defensive partnership in place of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

Marouane Fellaini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial all start, while Michael Carrick, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard miss out.

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Blind, Herrera, Fellaini, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic, Martial.

Aitor Karanka also makes five changes to the Middlesbrough line-up from Boxing Day.

Bernardo, George Friend, Grant Leadbitter, Adama Traore and Stewart Downing start, as Fabio (against his old club), Antonio Barrahan, Adam Clayton, Cristhian Stuani and Gaston Ramirez miss out.

Goalkeeper Victor Valdes plays against his previous team.

Boro XI: Valdes, Bernardo, Chambers, Gibson, Friend, Forshaw, Leadbitter, De Roon, Traore, Negredo, Downing.

"Working with me he always showed a characteristic that I value very highly – honesty. He is a very loyal man with principals.

"When someone has that moral backbone it doesn't matter what they do as a job they will always have an advantage.

"Aitor showed me those qualities and we will always be friends because that is the basis of everything."

The reason Aitor Karanka is in coaching today is because of Jose Mourinho, so the story goes., external

The Portuguese boss headhunted the former defender to become his assistant at Real Madrid in 2010.

Victory for Middlesbrough at Manchester United today will put that friendship firmly to test.
