I think Liverpool, with tonight's match being at Anfield, will just have that little bit too much for Manchester City.

These are the two closest challengers to Chelsea at the top of the table, so both really need to win. Liverpool are the highest scorers at home this season; Man City, the highest scorers away. And both have won their last three. So I'm expecting this to be a spectacle!

It's to chuck it down in the north west of England later this evening. I know that because I've been using that as a reason to convince my wife not to go out and watch a fireworks display tonight. No luck on that front, and no rain at Anfield yet.

It's quite a mild evening in Liverpool in fact, meaning minimal glove-wearing as the two teams go through their pre-match warm-ups.

  4. Aguero to end Anfield jinx?published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City front line, and his predatory skills will be a welcome boost for Pep Guardiola. There will be a stat that will trouble the City boss, though. Aguero has not scored in seven visits to Anfield...

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, as is his habit, is prowling the centre circle at Anfield having a close look at Manchester City's players warming up.

Klopp has gone for Emre Can in midfield ahead of striker Divock Origi - and one man he may not exactly be delighted to see warming up for Manchester City is striker Sergio Aguero, back after a four-match suspension.

  8. Meeting of the 'auld acquaintances'published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Liverpool v Man City (17:30 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray
    Match of the Day commentator

The final Premier League game of the year could hardly be a better one, as we 'see out the old' by perhaps finding out who will be Chelsea's chief chasers in 2017.

On the touchline, it's a first English meeting of two 'auld acquaintances' from the Bundesliga, although Jurgen Klopp insists that 'should be forgot' with "different players, different systems" at play here.

He and Pep Guardiola won't hesitate to change their systems as the game dictates, but any tactical tinkering shouldn't be to the detriment of entertainment.

Neither prioritises keeping goals out over scoring them - something that might have to be brought back into balance a bit more if Chelsea ARE to be challenged.

    Hello there!

In a little under seven hours, fireworks will light up the sky as London welcomes the new year but 2016 could end with a bang on the football pitch as two of the Premier League's entertainers go head-to-head at Anfield.

Liverpool are the top scorers in the top flight with 45 goals while Manchester City have scored just six fewer.

Both sides are strong in attack but shaky in defence and with none of the Klopp-Guardiola meetings in Germany ending goalless, we should be in for a thriller.

The Allianz Arena, April 2015. Jurgen Klopp sprints past a bemused Pep Guardiola to celebrate with his Borussia Dortmund players after they beat Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the German Cup.

Klopp and Guardiola faced each other on eight occasions during their time in Germany, with Klopp having the last laugh thanks to that dramatic penalty shootout win.

Now they meet for the first time in the Premier League and, for Guardiola, revenge is long overdue...
