Could Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill be in the frame to replace Gordon Strachan, if he steps down as Scotland boss?

He says Northern Irish fans shouldn't be worried...

With all the speculation surrounding Gordon Strachan, our own Tom English at the weekend suggested that the Scottish FA should look to Northern Ireland's Michael O'Neill as a replacement.

The former Dundee United and Hibernian midfielder, who played under Strachan at Coventry City, is much admired for leading his country out of the doldrums and to the Euro 2016 finals.

Asked if Northern Irish fans should be worried about his links with the Scottish post, the 47-year-old replied: "No, I don't think so. 

"First of all, there's someone in that job who I have a huge amount of respect for, who is a manger I played under."

Edinburgh-based O'Neill signed a new four-year contract in March.

"It's probably the fact I live in Scotland that is a bigger driving factor of that than anything else," he said of pundits touting him for the Scotland job. 

"I haven't given a second thought to that at all. I'd rather not give a comment on that situation at the minute to be fair."

Former Scotland duo Kris Boyd and Paul Dickov say Gordon Strachan has the backing of his players and should remain Scotland boss.

Former Scotland striker Paul Dickov says Gordon Strachan should remain as national head coach until at least the end of the current World Cup qualifying campaign. 

Strachan is believed to be considering his future after Friday's 3-0 defeat by England.

"There were plenty of signs in the England game that the players wanted to play for him," Dickov told BBC Scotland.

"As an ex-player and being in management, you look at the reaction of players and you can tell if players want to play for a manager or not when the going gets tough.

"The performance, certainly up until England scored their second goal, showed me that the players are right behind Gordon and his team.

"Gordon's passionate about his football and managing the national team and I do think he's the right man to take them forward, purely because of the reaction he got from the players at Wembley."

The draw for the last four of the Irn-Bru Cup has produced an all saints semi-final. 

Welsh champions The New Saints are away to Scottish Championship strugglers St Mirren. 

And Queen of the South host Championship rivals Dundee United.

The two ties are on the weekend of 18/19 February. 

It is the first season that the Scottish Challenge Cup has had guest sides from the Welsh and Northern Irish leagues.

Redevelopment work on Tynecastle Stadium's main stand is expected to begin this week.

Hearts owner Ann Budge told BBC Scotland in October she hopes the new stand, which will increase the stadium capacity to over 20,000, will be fully operational 12 months after work starts.

He isn't the first goalkeeper to have attempted to prove his prowess in the other penalty box.

Some have been quite successful, but things didn't quite work out for former Partick Thistle, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone goalkeeper Jonathan Tuffey when he assumed penalty duties for Glenavon.

Steven Gerrard for Celtic? The rumour mill is proving strong enough for the Scottish Professional Football League's sponsor to make the Scottish champions favourites to sign the former England midfielder.

That's despite present Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp having said that the 36-year-old would be welcome back at Anfield.

The Scouser has now hinted on Instagram that he is about to leave LA Galaxy and heading for Celtic Park would, of course, mean a re-union with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

While Ladbrokes have slashed the odds on a move to Glasgow, Liverpool are second favourites, ahead of Newcastle United, New York City, New York Red Bulls and, strangely, Rangers.

Gerrard joined Galaxy in July 2015 on an 18-month contract after leaving Liverpool and this year helped his side finish third in the Western Conference.

Kris Boyd hasn't given up hope that Scotland can still qualify as Group F runners-up for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia - especially as he believes the players are still behind head coach Gordon Strachan.

“I just think there is an opportunity round the corner," the Kilmarnock striker, who was capped 18 times for Scotland, told BBC 5 live.

"Four of the next six qualifying games are at home, which is massive.  

"We have got quite a decent record at home.

“With six games left and four of them at home, I don’t think the campaign is finished."

The suggestion by one newspaper this morning that David Moyes, currently with English Premier League strugglers Sunderland, could be interested in the Scotland job if Gordon Strachan stands down doesn't appear to be meeting the approval of many fans on Twitter.

A new exhibition about Aberdeen's proposals for a new stadium on the outskirts of the city is to be held.

At least one Scottish manager appears to be doing well in England.

While some media outlets and a lot of Scotland fans seem to have turned against Gordon Strachan, most players, pundits and fellow managers are giving the Scotland head coach their backing.

Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd, speaking this morning on BBC Radio 5 live, is the latest.

“For me, he should stay," said the 18-times capped 33-year-old. 

"He is hurting, there is no doubt about it, the same as everybody else is.

"But there is nobody else out there that is a strong candidate to take the job. 

"I am not saying that, if there was anybody, Gordon should lose his job.

“We went to Wembley with a game plan and, apart from silly mistakes, we could have come away with something. 

"I know that sounds stupid after a 3-0 defeat, but the fine margins that win and lose games happened with Scotland."
