Former Newcastle midfielder John Anderson on BBC Newcastle:

"Rafael Benitez might just think about making a change as it needs something to spark it. We haven’t passed it well enough and it’s all been a little bit too pedestrian.

"I don't think he's too happy down below us the manager - it hasn't been good at the start of the second half, although saying that we are still 1-0 up."

  2. Postpublished at 64 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Wigan giving a much better account of themselves than they did in the first half.

A moment of panic from Newcastle could let them back in.

  4. Postpublished at 58 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Another good chance for Wigan from a corner and Will Grigg does connect with a header from Michael Jacobs' ball this time.

Grigg not quite getting enough of his head on it as he glances across goal and just wide of the far post.

  5. Postpublished at 58 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Former Newcastle midfielder John Anderson on BBC Newcastle:

"I think Wigan have to up it and I’m sure that’s what Warren Joyce would have been saying at half-time. They have got to be quicker in what they do and got to be sharper - and that’s what they’ve done at the start of this second half."

Lots of noise from the travelling Newcastle supporters.

But, their side aren't in complete control of this one just yet despite having plenty of chances to stretch their lead, including the shot from Jonjo Shelvey above.

  7. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

More encouragement for Wigan here as Will Grigg almost gets his head on the end of a cross by Michael Jacobs.

Karl Darlow is there to put him off enough to avoid a clean contact.

  8. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Bit of an uncertain start from both sides to the second half.

Plenty of giving the ball away and Wigan are forcing some early pressure after the break.

  12. For Wolves, read Birmingham?published at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    Gianfranco ZolaImage source, Rex Features

Today's shock events at Birmingham bear an uncanny resemblance to what happened across the Midlands at Wolves in the summer.

An old-established club in the area is taken over by new Chinese owners, sack their manager, then appoint a new one, in each case a famous Italian footballer whose name begins with Z, within 12 hours.

And they say lightning never strikes twice!

Read more on Zola's appointment here.

  13. In case you missed it....published at 20:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

Rowett departs, Zola arrives at Birmingham City

It's been a busy day in the Blue half of Birmingham today with the manager's door literally revolving.

Out has gone Gary Rowett who was sacked after more than two years in charge and in has come former Chelsea and Italy striker Gianfranco Zola as his replacement.

    Reaction on its way....

  14. Half-time analysispublished at 20:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

    Mo Diame scoresImage source, PA

Former Newcastle midfielder John Anderson on BBC Newcastle:

"It hasn’t been great, we haven’t knocked it about that well and it's been a bit sloppy. We've been a little bit lax and lazy in the stuff we have done and Wigan have got in around the back of us a couple of times, but they haven’t got the bodies in the box to cause us any real concerns.

"It was a good goal, but all of Wigan’s own making and a good little finish at the end by Diame.

"You would like them to kick on in the second half and put the game to bed. If you get the ball into those forward areas, we have the players who can get it into the back of the net. We don't want to give Wigan any encouragement whatsoever."

  15. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:35 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    Nottingham Forest 0-1 Preston

Simon Makienok's goal in the last minute of the first half gives Preston a half time lead at the City Ground.

The visitors are probably good value for their lead, with Callum Robinson and Alan Browne both going close for Simon Grayson's men earlier in the half.

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

And that is the break at the DW Stadium.

Newcastle dominant, but just the one goal to show for it so far from Mo Diame's brilliant run and finish...

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:33 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    QPR 0-0 Derby

Not been too much going on at Loftus Road.

The hosts have shaded a poor first half, with Scott Carson forced into a couple of saves in the Derby goal.

A win for the Rams would see them go fifth.

  18. Postpublished at 45+1 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Close once more to a Newcastle second goal as Jonjo Shelvey plays a give-and-go and takes a right-footed shot from outside of the box.

Jaaskelainen across again to tip it behind, but from the resulting corner he is in no-man's-land when the ball is headed off his palms.

Safely out for a Newcastle throw-in.

  19. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Newcastle free-kick from 35 yards out taken by Dwight Gayle and well-gathered by Jussi Jaskelainen as he moves to his right.
