  2. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Very close to a Newcastle second goal from a defensive mix-up.

Substitute Andy Kellett has to lunge with his head at the last second to divert a dangerous ball from Matt Ritchie behind for a corner, but it wasn't too far away from his own goal.

  3. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Isaac Hayden needs to be a bit careful after his earlier yellow card.

He trips David Perkins inside his own area after the Wigan midfielder shepherds the ball out of touch, but Hayden just gets a warning for that.

  4. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Former Newcastle midfielder John Anderson on BBC Newcastle:

”I don’t see the sense in playing the ball along your own back line when you are 1-0 up – just get it forward. We’ve been sloppy on one or two occasions and given the ball away.”

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 33 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Isaac Hayden in the book for Newcastle after a late challenge in midfield.

That's his fifth of the season for the midfielder who played a pivotal part in his side's goal so far tonight.

  6. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

Good response by Wigan to going behind.

David Perkins slides a lovely ball across the Newcastle six-yard box as he gets free on the right, but there's nobody there at the back post to finish.

  7. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

The visitors buoyed by that Diame goal and Jonjo Shelvey takes a speculative strike from a free-kick 40 yards out.

Ball bounces in front of Jasskelainen who can pick that up with ease.

  8. goal

    GOAL (Diame)published at 26 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Newcastle United

If Dwight Gayle doesn't get you, Mo Diame will.

Newcastle take the lead courtesy of a superb run from the former Hull midfielder, who after picking the ball up from halfway, played a lovely one-two with Isaac Hayden on the edge of the box before slotting in past Jasskelainen into the bottom corner.

    Wigan Athletic 0-0 Newcastle United

No chances yet for the Championship's top scorer Dwight Gayle, who is averaging a goal every game with a current strike rate of finding the net once every 80 minutes for Newcastle.

His 16 goals put him top of the shots in the division - three ahead of Brighton's Glenn Murray and Scott Hogan of Brentford.

    Wigan Athletic 0-0 Newcastle United

Former Newcastle midfielder John Anderson on BBC Newcastle:

“I thought Newcastle started well and controlled the pace of the game and had plenty of the ball, but then we started to get a little bit sloppy and Wigan closed us down and they started to get into the game. We need to start moving the ball quicker than we have done.”

  11. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20 mins

Early enforced change for Wigan with Luke Garbutt having to head off with an injury.

Andy Kellett is on in his place as Wigan force their first corner.

  12. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-0 Newcastle United

First real moment of attacking intent shown by Wigan with winger Yanic Wildschut finding some space down the right.

Hangs over a searching ball towards Will Grigg and the back post, but it's beyond the Northern Irishman and out for a goal kick.

  13. Postpublished at 14 mins

Still quite a quiet opening here at the DW. Newcastle with the bulk of possession, but Wigan holding their shape so far defensively.
