You have to go back 15 years to 2001 to find English football's last winner of the 'golden ball' when Michael Owen scooped the award.

That year Owen helped Liverpool to a Uefa Cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble as well scoring a hat-trick in England's 5-1 thumping of Germany in Munich.

    Jamie Vardy (Leicester and England)

Congratulations Jamie Vardy! You are the EIGHTH best player on the continent, Imagine telling him that when he was playing for Stocksbridge Park Steels...

Twenty goals for club and country in 2016, and a Premier League winners' medal later, this is no pipedream.

Simon, Croydon; Vardy better message the boss he might be late for the Bornemouth game tomorrow.

    Pepe (Real Madrid and Portugal)

Wow. Further evidence that success at an international tournament boosts your standing.

Pepe might snarl and gnarl more than next door's rottweiler, but the world's leading journalists clearly think the Portugal centre-back can play a bit. As well as find every spot of bother on a football pitch.

Helping his nation win Euro 2016 and Real Madrid lift the Champions League, lifts him into top 10.

    Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus and Italy)

The oldest man on the list shows he can still mix it with the kids.

Veteran Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon, who turns 39 next month, sneaks into the top 10 after another fine year, helping the Old Lady win a domestic treble.

He's been sniffing around the Ballon d'Or list since 2003. Like a vintage malt whiskey.

Who will win the Ballon d'Or?

Not lucky enough to be one of the 173 journalists given a Ballon d'Or vote? Me neither.

Quite a few of you have been asking who is. I don't know. No-one in the BBC Sport Online office (that I'm aware of).

Anyway, you have all been pretending you have the power. And here's the final result...

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund and Gabon)

Double bubble. He missed out on the BBC African Footballer of the Year gong, now Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang comes up short in the Ballon d'Or race.

No trophies for the jet-heeled Borussia Dortmund striker won't have helped his case. But he can look back on 2016 with satisfaction after smashing in 31 goals for club and country.

Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon and Portugal)

How many Portuguese journalists had a vote? A few judging by this entry high up the chart.

That's not to belittle the Portugal goalkeeper's year. He was impressive as the last line of defence for the Euro 2016 winners.

Big stage, big Ballon d'Or points.

    Hang on Barry, not necessarily.

Eleven players, whose identity we will find out at the end, did not receive a single vote. So they have been wiped out.

Jamie Vardy could be - although let's hope he isn't - one of the names on the teamsheet of the Cast-Off XI.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris St-Germain/Manchester United)

    He is Zlatan.

The Swedish legend might be having a statue built in his homeland, he won't be popping a Ballon d'Or on his mantelpiece.

The 35-year-old striker finishes a credible 13th place after smashing in a whopping 40 goals for Paris St-Germain, Manchester United and Sweden in 2016.
