Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia)

Another name revealed, another Real Madrid player.

Luka Modric, like Toni Kroos, has been a key cog in the all-conquering Real Madrid machine this year.

  2. Joint 17thpublished at 16:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

Toni Kroos (Real Madrid and Germany)

He might help make the current Champions League holders AND the last World Cup winners tick but Toni Kroos is propping up the 30-man shortlist.

Although that is no criticism. The 26-year-old midfielder earned one point to share bottom place with two other players.

MP: Ronaldo! Simply can't ignore the competition wins he's been involved in this year.

Joseph Walsh: The #ballondor2016 must go to Cristiano Ronaldo. He is the GOAT, won the CL, scored a ton of goals and lifted the European Championship.

Jason Yates: Ronaldo he's done something Messi never has won a tournament with his own country

So the question that everybody wants to know is - who is going to be sticking that gold-dipped. 12kg-weighing, brass ball on their mantelpiece tonight?

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the current holder, but his arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo is the overwhelming favourite with the bookmakers to put another shiny, gold ball on his mantelpiece. Are they right? Or can someone like Gareth Bale or Antoine Griezmann help hit the bookies hard in the pocket?

But who SHOULD win and why? Tweet using #bbcfootball or if you still remember those almost archaic things call text messages then send one to 81111.

And don't be shy in revealing your tales of industry awards nights out. Keep them clean...

We don't often get the chance to watch Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi sat together awkwardly chin-wagging in tuxedos do we?

The Ballon d'Or usually gives us one of those rare opportunities.

Except....the awards this year might be lacking a bit of stardust because Ronaldo is actually away at the World Club Cup in Japan with Real Madrid.

And Messi is on a plane to Qatar where Barca are playing in a mid-season friendly.

Still, there's plenty of golden moments from 2016 to look back upon so stick with us.

Over the next few hours we will be bringing you all the news, goss and pictures in Paris as it happens.

You will feel so close to the action that you'll almost be able to smell the pricey aftershave slapped over the world's most greatest footballers.

Although we already know the biggest names will not be there...

Had the penguin suit dry-cleaned? Bought a snazzy new frock? Nice. You are fit to rub shoulders with the illuminati of the football world.

However, there is a small problem. Your name is not down on the list. The beefy, bow-tied bouncers aren't going to let you in.

Luckily, we're here to tell you everything that is happening at the Ballon d'Or shindig.

Whether Jamie Vardy is shuffling uncomfortably in his seat as he makes small talk with Lionel Messi. Whether Gareth Bale beats Paul Pogba to the last piece of crusty French baguette. Or whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic sinks a glass of frothy lager as the 2016 Ballon d'Or winner is revealed.

Disclaimer: That is presuming any of the big names turn up...
