  • Burnley seek first away win of season

And that is that. Plenty of late drama - there was still time for Troy Deeney to have a late goal disallowed for handball, and for Burnley to win a late free-kick that keeper Tom Heaton came up for, without success.

But in a week where iceberg lettuce became big news, these are salad days for Watford - two Premier League wins in a week for them; the green shoots of recovery are clearly visible after they appeared to be wilting at the turn of the year. As for Burnley, still no carrot of an away win on the road for them. I'm off to flesh out the match report, which is already up on the site.

"You just get the feeling Burnley will get one more chance," says MOTD's John Roder. And he's right. Three minutes of stoppage time played, and Craig Cathcart's slip allows Ashley Barnes a sight of goal. He's in here, and lets the shot go - but Heurelho Gomes blocks.

Into four minutes of stoppage time. Watford hanging on a bit here.

Final two changes to tell you about: Sam Vokes, who got Burnley's late winner against Leicester in midweek, is on for George Boyd. Can Vokes repeat the trick? Watford bring Daryl Janmaat on for Mauro Zarate, who has had a decent debut.

The second half has, by and large, been rather sleepy, but it has suddenly developed an edge. Troy Deeney challenges Matt Lowton, who responds with a little nudge of the Watford striker's shoulder. Deeney, unimpressed, grabs Lowton round the neck, and it all becomes a bit of a playground scrap after that. Referee Michael Oliver intervenes and threatens to send them to the headmaster if they don't cool it. That seems to do the trick.

    Watford 2-1 Burnley

Burnley feel the point is there for the taking as Robbie Brady breaks down the left. He's a long way out and goes for the Hollywood goal. It's a fierce strike, and on target, and Heurelho Gomes has to save it - which he does comfortably enough.

A couple of substitutions to bring you up to date with: Ashley Westwood came on for a Burnley debut, replacing Scott Arfield, shortly before that penalty. Shortly after it, Watford's Isaac Success comes on for M'Baye Niang.

    Ashley Barnes (pen)

Heurelho Gomes has a good record of saving penalties, but he is beaten here as Ashley Barnes' kick goes in off the post. It's only Burnley's fifth away goal of the season, and three of them have been penalties. Could there be a comeback in this yet? It would be some achievement for the visitors if they got a point from here.

  9. PENALTY TO BURNLEYpublished at 77 mins

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

Well. A scramble follows a Burnley corner, and the ball comes loose to Joey Barton outside the area. The midfielder's goalbound shot is deflected just wide off the arm of Sebastian Prodl, and Michael Oliver points to the spot.

Applause from the Watford fans as we reach the 72nd minute. They are paying tribute to the former manager Graham Taylor, who died last month at the age of 72, and whose funeral took place in the town on Wednesday.

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

M'Baye Niang, who has had a very good home debut, almost claims a second assist with a great ball in from the right. Troy Deeney, on the run, connects with a boot, but Tom Heaton somehow adjusts to prevent himself from diving past the ball. It's a fine block by the Burnley keeper.

Burnley striker Ashley Barnes asks the referee a question. And the question is: "Can I have a penalty?" The answer is: "No."

Barnes runs through on to Scott Arfield's pass, and Sebastian Prodl just puts an arm across the striker's path, like a nightclub bouncer barring access until he's seen your ID.

Watford win a free-kick wide on the left. Mauro Zarate plays it short to Tom Cleverley, without a goal since April - but the midfielder's shot sails way over the bar. Second half is rather dying on its feet here, but at least the players seem to have stopped kicking each other with quite the vigour they did in the opening 45 minutes.

Change for Watford: Valon Behrami takes the applause of the home fans as he strides off, and is replaced by French midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

We've had a flurry of corners in the past few minutes, none of which have amounted to a great deal. Burnley, on a promising counter-attack, win another as George Boyd breaks down the right and his cross is deflected behind.

Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes claims a foul as he struggles to get a hand to the delivery - and the result is another corner. Scott Arfield plays it in, there's a scramble, and Burnley's Ben Mee, up from the back, is penalised for handball. As you were.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 55 mins

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

Robbie Brady, whose £13m move to Burnley from Hull was secured on transfer deadline day, is brought on for a debut. Think it's asking a lot of him to transform this match, but it will be useful for him and his new team-mates as a getting-to-know-you session, if nowt else. Andre Gray is the man replaced.

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

Burnley win a corner which, I'm reliably told by MOTD's John Roder, is only the fourth of the match. Scott Arfield delivers, Michael Keane rises 10 yards out and Heurelho Gomes has to get down at his near post to push aside the downward header. Corner number five immediately follows, with rather less excitement.

Jose Holebas, a very good attacking full-back when he isn't busy gathering yellow cards like a Crystal Maze contestant collecting gold tokens, makes a good run down the right and drives the ball across goal. Sadly for him, the corridor of uncertainty is empty.

The floodlights are on at Vicarage Road now, and Watford are seeking goal number three. Mauro Zarate plays a one-two with Tom Cleverley, and curls for goal from the edge of the area. Scott Arfield's deflection takes the sting off the shot, though, and Tom Heaton gathers.

    John Roder
Match of the Day commentator at Vicarage Road

"The win at Arsenal in midweek looks as if it could be a turning point for Watford's season, coming as it did on the back of a run of seven league games without a win."
