Summary

  • Watford won at Arsenal on Tuesday

  • Burnley seek first away win of season

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

The players are back out to the fast beats of Darude's turn of the millennium dance hit Sandstorm. Burnley must feel they were caught in a sandstorm after that first half. See what I did there? Oh, never mind.

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

I know Burnley won a game against Liverpool in August with 19% possession. And I know territory isn't everything. Football isn't rugby union, after all. But the 10 men were second best in that first half, and the stats show it. This is going to be some turn around if they come back from here.

  3. NFL Show's Osi tackles keepy-uppy challengepublished at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

There's quite a big football game this weekend on the other side of the pond in the American version of the game.

But how would a former NFL star get on with the FA People's Cup keepy-uppy challenge?

Entries to the 2017 FA People's Cup are now open (but there's not that long left) and you can find out how to get involved here.

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

I have seen teams come back from 2-0 down with 10 men before, but not very often. Not sure even Anneka Rice would fancy Burnley's challenge right now.

    GOAL - M'Baye Niangpublished at 45+1 mins

    Watford 2-0 Burnley

A lovely goal to end the half, though. M'Baye Niang, whose cross created the first goal, scores the second himself. Jose Holebas gets plenty of power in the cross, and Niang angles a delightful header beyond Tom Heaton.

Last minute of the first half. Watford win a corner and play it short. Mauro Zarate's cross is half-cleared by Michael Keane to Etienne Capoue on the edge of the box, and his shot goes smack into the face of Ashley Barnes. Watford's players appeal for handball - and if that doesn't sum up the spirit of this first half, I don't know what does.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

A fair summary there from John Roder. And yet, as Burnley start to push in search of an equaliser, Watford show they have the pace to catch them on the counter'attack. Mauro Zarate, from the left, cuts in past Matt Lowton and fizzes a shot across goal. Tom Heaton seems pretty sure it's going wide, and the Burnley goalkeeper is correct.

"Burnley in the last 10 minutes or so, are showing more signs that they're coming to terms with being a man down."

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Watford, having ridden that Burnley flurry, set off in search of a second goal. M'Baye Niang turns 10 yards inside the visitors' half, rides a couple of challenges on the edge of the penalty area and squeezes a shot towards goal as the claret and blue shirts close in. It's a comfortable save for Tom Heaton, but it brings applause from the home fans.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

I think Michael Oliver has had enough here. As Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue goes into the book for the afternoon's eight millionth foul, the referee shakes his head like an exasperated primary school teacher. If the players carry on like this, he'll be keeping them in at playtime.

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 33 mins

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Joey Barton scored a free-kick against Southampton last month, and almost gets another one. The midfielder floats a lovely set-piece over the wall, and Heurelho Gomes tips over. The corner is cleared.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

The visitors starting to threaten now. Ashley Barnes pushes a ball through to George Boyd on the edge of the area. Boyd almost wriggles through, but is clipped by Valon Behrami right on the edge of the area. Burnley free-kick, 20 yards out...

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

A rare Burnley attack. Matt Lowton gets forward from right-back and combines with George Boyd. There are targets in the middle, but Lowton cannot find them and his cross bounces through to Heurelho Gomes.

The Watford goalkeeper, incidentally, is wearing purple, despite the fact that Burnley are in claret. Michael Oliver must have been satisfied that this isn't a colour clash. Mind you, I saw a Scottish Premiership match the other week in which Rangers' outfield players and their keeper all wore blue. That's modern football for you. Rant over.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Mauro Zarate, playing on the left of Watford's front three, has looked lively in patches so far. One surge down the left almost sets up Tom Cleverley in the middle, but Ben Mee scrambles clear for Burnley. Then the new signing from Fiorentina snaps a volley towards goal after Troy Deeney heads a throw-in back towards the edge of the penalty area. Tom Heaton holds it. The sun is back with us.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 23 mins

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Briefly, a football match breaks out. Watford striker Troy Deeney's smart lay-off gives M'Baye Niang the chance to second a curler towards the top corner from 20 yards. Burnley keeper Tom Heaton flies to his right to tip the ball away.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Another couple of minutes, another whack. This time Jose Holebas, trying to control a bouncing pass from Sebastian Prodl, boots a ducking Joey Barton in the head. Barton is on his feet after a dab of the magic sponge, and Holebas gets his 11th Premier League booking of the season. Four more and he'll get a three-match ban.

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

The sun has gone in for the moment. Perhaps it can't bear to watch the tackles flying in. Now goalscorer Troy Deeney gives Burnley left-back Stephen Ward a shove. There's been bite to this game from the moment Ward made that challenge on M'Baye Niang in the early minutes.

  18. 'A cowardly tackle'published at 15:15 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    Trevor Sinclair

That was a really, really cowardly tackle by Jeff Hendrick - a definite red card.

Burnley will be lucky to get something from this now.

  19. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Sean Dyche looks to have brought Ashley Barnes back from a forward role to help supplement Burnley's midfield. Hard to see how they improve that miserable run of away results from here, but stranger things have happened. I mean, have you seen the news recently?

  20. goal

GOAL - Troy Deeneypublished at 10 mins

    Watford 1-0 Burnley

Burnley, reorganising to a 4-3-1-1 following Hendrick's dismissal, are in trouble now. For Watford, it's the perfect start. Craig Cathcart, down the right, plays a short pass infield to M'Baye Niang, who crosses deep to the far post for Troy Deeney to head his seventh of the season - and his third in four games.
