  2. 'Mixed emotions'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Preston 1-2 Arsenal

More from Preston boss Simon Grayson, speaking with BBC Sport: "We have got mixed emotions tonight. I am very proud of how hard they worked and the quality against a top, top team. We will draw the positives as much as possible and hopefully in the future we will be on the end of a victory, not a defeat.

"We stopped them playing and got on the front foot. We just didn't quite take the opportunities when they came. We have had good chances but you need a second or third goal against a team like Arsenal. We warned the players to start the game quickly in the second half but we let Ramsey have room that we didn't in the first half. It was a kick in the teeth when the goal went in at the end.

"We keep telling the players they are good players and to work hard and have no regrets. The energy and quality levels were fantastic and we will keep working hard. We play Brighton next week - maybe it will be us having a late win, not a defeat."

Preston boss Simon Grayson, speaking to BT: "We didn't take our chances when they came. Some of our play was exceptional. We nullified a lot of their threat. But we didn't get that second goal which is crucial. We didn't go in with an advantage that we thoroughly deserved.

"Good players make good decisions and punish the opposition when they get the chance. But we can be very proud today.

"We said to the players to go out and enjoy and express themselves. We will tell that to the players from now and see where it takes us."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "Someone reminded me yesterday that I have never been out in the third round in 21 years, but tonight, in the first half, it was close. Preston played with enthusiasm and quality in the first half, they were quicker than us all over.

"Maybe subconsciously we thought that it would be easier and at half-time we knew we could have been out.

"I believe that we have a togetherness and fighting spirit and that is why we have these comebacks. It was a typical cup tie with English enthusiasm and the crowd cheering on their team."

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, speaking with BT Sport: "We wanted to start the game better than the last one but they surprised us with their commitment. We were not in the game. We wanted to bounce back second half and show character. We did that.

"They put a lot of intensity in the game and all the team was beaten. It was not Arsenal. We are pleased with the amazing support of the fans."

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey: "It was a tough opening half. I have played in the Championship, I know how difficult the teams are to play against. It was important for us to come out and show what we are about in the second half. We all realise it wasn't good enough for this club."

On his goal: "I am happy that one has finally gone in. It gave us momentum to get the result. We keep going to the end and have scored a lot of late goals, We have that belief.

"We need to start games better and give ourselves an easier job. We have shown character to come back but it would be nice to turn that around and start games better."

The first half was all about Preston North End, but after the interval Arsenal started so brightly. The first goal by Aaron Ramsey was a great strike and then, late on, Olivier Giroud hit the winner.

The Gunners deserved it based on that second half alone.

It's been coming the whole of the second half. An untypical Arsenal goal, coming from a long ball. It looked like nothing was on but a backheel pulled the ball back into play and it was a deflected finish from Olivier Giroud.

Preston have certainly tired but credit to Arsenal, who have just kept going.
