And a bit of claret into the cocktail.

Jordan Hugill catches Arsenal defender Gabriel with a stray elbow as the go up for a long ball forward.

Gabriel has a long stream of blood flowing down his face and his eyeballs are out on stalks as he looks to confront Hugill.

Bobby Madley is on the scene. Yellow card to cool down Hugill and a magic sponge to patch up Gabriel.

    On we go.

Chris Lord: Wenger's never lost a third round tie...

Paul Hawkins: Good God, this is as poor a performance from Arsenal as I've seen for a long time. Just awful. No defence.

Gooner71: Who is the Championship side?

A high ball played in by Paul Gallagher and the advancing Paul Huntington put David Ospina under plenty of pressure. To be fair, I think the referee was correct in awarding the foul.

  5. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 39 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

Paul Huntington clambers into Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina as the ball is floated into the visitors' box.

Callum Robinson nods in it breaks free, but Robert Madley's whistles has already blown.

Huntingdon is incensed but that was the sort of challenge that went out with flares.

  6. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

This is a slug-fest of a cup tie.

Most of the punches are being thrown by Preston, but Arsenal get in a quick counter with Aaron Ramsey's sharp header claimed well by Chris Maxwell.

Shkodran Mustafi to the rescue for a reeling Arsenal defence!

The former Valencia defender slides in to hack away as Paul Gallagher punts a chip gently over the advancing David Ospina and towards goal.

The definition of indecision from Olivier Giroud.

A neat reverse ball for the Frenchman from Alex Iwobi and Giroud manages to clip the ball wide, neither going for a dinked finish or a lofted return pass to Iwobi.

Brilliant, intricate play from Arsenal on the edge of the Preston area. But no-one, especially not Aaron Ramsay, took it upon themselves to get a shot away with the goal gaping.

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal belatedly show a little top-tier quality.

Olivier Giroud threads a little through ball between two Preston legs but Aaron Ramsey dithers and dallies a little too long when he needed to hit it first time.

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell is out to usher him away from danger.

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

Olivier Giroud glances a header well wide, but it is small change compared to the abundance of chances that Preston have created at the other end.

Will Preston regret not converting more than one? it is a script that we have all read before.

  12. 'Vermijl should have done better'published at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

Everything good for Preston is coming through Callum Robinson on the wide left. His great cross landed right on the boot of the advancing full-back Marnick Vermijl, but he scuffed his shot wide. Should have done better.

  13. Postpublished at 27 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

A deep cross from Aidan McGeady floats over Nacho Monreal at the far stick and Marnick Vermijl loads up his right peg, dreaming of glory.

The Preston full-back slashes his volley wide though from a tight angle and 10 yards.

It made sense to go for power, but the execution was not there.

Ben Pearson warms David Ospina's palms with a dipping effort from 20 yards.

Arsenal are slumbering around in second gear. It has been an absolutely wretched first 25 mins or so.

  15. 'What a chance for PNE!'published at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

    Kevin Kilbane
Former Preston & Everton winger at Deepdale for 5 live Sport

That should be 2-0, what a chance for PNE! Callum Robinson in behind but his ball across to Jordan Hugill was massively overhit and the ball skidded across the box and out on the far side.

The Arsenal defence were at sixes and sevens.

  16. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

    Should be two!

Callum Robinson springs Arsenal's shonky offside traps once again as Monreal is caught behind his defensive team-mates and slides the ball across for Jordan Hugill.

Hugill slides in but somehow fails to get anything on the ball with the goal wide open in front of him.

    Any touch would have done.

  17. CLOSE!published at 22 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

Great gaping holes in the Arsenal defence and the tackles, when they come, are pretty flaky.

Aidan McGeady drives through midfield, Jordan Hugill crosses from the left and only Shkodran Mustafi's last-ditch block denies Callum Robinson a clear header at goal from all of five yards.

  18. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Preston 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal are playing Russian roulette with the linesman's flag.

Gabriel steps up late and fast to try and catch Callum Robinson offside.

He gets the decision. But replays show he shouldn't have. Robinson was a clear two yards good and Jordan Hugill was waiting for a cross in the middle.

    Lucky.

Granit Xhaka has not set the world alight since his big-money summer move and he looks a half-beat off the pace once again and he passes straight to the feet of a Preston defender to end a promising Arsenal move.

Meer Shah: New year, same Arsenal. The defensive problems are yet to go away.

Simon Jedryka: And again, Arsenal's players do not turn up for the match...

Azza Gold: Why do we start off with such a poor tempo? It's happened at Bournemouth and now at Preston.
