That was Morgan Schneiderlin's first goal in an Everton shirt since joining from Manchester United in January for a fee rising to £24m.

Chances are few and far between in a game which has yet to ignite but Leighton Baines easily beats Nacer Chadli before clipping in a cross which Romelu Lukaku heads wide from close range.

Two big chances for Lukaku yet it remains goalless.

At 36, Gareth Barry is the second oldest player on the pitch behind 37-year-old Gareth McAuley. Barry has already covered a fair distance and tracks back to get in a challenge which thwarts Nacer Chadli inside the Toffees penalty area.

It's Wales against Wales as Hal Robson-Kanu goes down inside the Everton area while tussling with Ashley Williams.

A couple of West Brom players want a penalty. The referee is not interested.

Tony Pulis will be pleased with this. Everton have been restricted to one clear chance in the opening quarter of the game.

It's an untidy game but the Baggies, who have not kept a clean sheet on their Premier League travels since the opening day of the season, are growing into this.

Sharp passing just outside the West Brom penalty area leads to Gareth Barry releasing Romelu Lukaku.

The striker is unmarked and lets fly from an angle from about 12 yards...it's agonisingly wide.

That's the game's first big chance.
