It's one of football oldest cliches that any team hopeful of any lasting success must know how to win when they're not playing well. On this evidence, then, Wednesday look a good bet.

Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal blamed tiredness on his side not firing on all cylinders at the DW Stadium. But his team still won all three points, they're back in the top six - and that's all that matters, for them.

Wigan, on the other hand, need a spark from somewhere. And they must hope that one of their eight deadline day signings can provide it.

It was a scrappy night out in Wigan and, although the Owls fans above won't care, let's hope the next episode proves more entertaining.

Goodnight. We're back at 14:00 GMT tomorrow with all Saturday's EFL action.

That's almost all we have for you this evening, but before we go, and if you've just joined us, let me point you in the direction of Steve Marshall's match report.

It wasn't a classic game but Sheffield Wednesday fans won't care as they sit in sixth place tonight and have put pressure back on the chasing pack.

  3. Owls boss blames tiredness for poor gamepublished at 21:50

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal blamed his side's under-energised performance on having to play so soon after their late arrival back from Tuesday night's 2-2 draw at Bristol City.

"It was not a good game," he said. "But we arrived home at 3am on Wednesday morning and two days later we are playing again, while Wigan did not play for six days. That can make a massive difference. It explains why we came down a little in the last 20 minutes.

"Jordan Rhodes is a player who knows very well this competition. Tonight, he was crucial to us winning the three points."

  4. Wednesday's season 'built on clean sheets' - Bannanpublished at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday's seventh 1-0 win this season is more than any other side in the Championship, while 11 of their overall total of 14 victories have been by a single goal.

"We've built this season on clean sheets," midfielder Barry Bannan told Sky Sports. "And we know we've got enough going forward to score goals.

"We've been on a good run in which we've not won games that should have gone our way so it's good to come and get three points at a tough place like this."

Finally, finally in the seventh minute of injury time, the final whistle goes, much to the relief of Sheffield Wednesday.

Carlos Carvalhal's side are back into the Championship's top six this evening thanks to that first-half goal from Ross Wallace.

Corner to Wigan causes a late kerfuffle as the Owls fail to clear their lines before Michael Jacobs' suspiciously offside looking shot flashes across the face. But it's too little, too late!

  8. Postpublished at 90+5 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

All three previous Wigan Athletic-Sheffield Wednesday fixtures have been settled by a single goal. And this one looks like being no different.

  9. Postpublished at 90+3 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Three minutes into added time and Wednesday spurn an attacking free-kick opportunity to pass it square instead. Not hard to see what they've done there!

  10. Postpublished at 90 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Six minutes of added time to come. Largely down to the early second-half injury suffered by visiting keeper Keiren Westwood. But it offers the hosts a little late hope.

  11. Postpublished at 88 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Wigan had a chance to climb out of the Championship's bottom three if they had won tonight. But it's surely not going to happen now! They don't look like scoring once, never mind twice!

Which deadline day signing can't you wait to see in action?

Thetruevillainavfc: Looking forward to seeing how Hogan will get on.

Liam R-W: Big Chris Taylor's return to Oldham!

SJ McNab: Wigan have done so little wrong tonight. They lack in individual skill but are a very well organised team. Can't see them going down.

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Time running out here for Wigan, with only four minutes, plus injury time, to get something.

After seeing their side's increased efforts in the second half come to nothing, the home fans have gone pretty quiet.

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 85 mins

Sam Morsy is booked. Only the second caution of the night, but no real surprise as he's put himself about a bit.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 81 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Almen Abdi comes on for his old Watford team-mate Fernando Forestieri - the Owls' second substitution.

Carlos Carvalhal certainly had to try something different as Wigan have been taking hold of the midfield tussle.

  16. Postpublished at 75 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Substitute James Weir very close to equalising. He heads over from eight yards after being neatly picked out by Michael Jacobs' cross. In all honesty, he should have scored though.

Connolly then has a shot blocked and the Owls' offside trap is again close to being breached as Wigan really start to threaten.

  17. Postpublished at 71 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Close call as Wigan get the ball in the back of the net through Callum Connolly. Tight offside decision, but the linesman gets it right.

The on-loan Everton youngster took it well though.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 67 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

    Warren JoyceImage source, Rex Features

Wigan have certainly not been at their best - and Will Grigg's certainly not been on fire tonight, having now gone 16 games without a goal.

He's hardly had much of a service but he's first to get the hook, along with David Perkins, as Wigan boss Warren Joyce makes a double substitution, bringing on two of his new signings, striker Omar Bogle and midfielder James Weir.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 62 mins

    Wigan Athletic 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Jack Hunt receives the night's first booking from Mr Martin. It was unquestionably a late challenge on Michael Jacobs, who was looking to go clear down the left.

Which of your club's January signings can't you wait to see?

Wayne Ellis: As an Ipswich fan, it's hard to say which of our loan signings I'm most excited about...

Cumbria Photos: Looking forward to seeing any players on the pitch for Morecambe, as they haven't been paid this month!

Nathan Brunnen: Looking forward to seeing Jamal Lowe in the Pompey first team after a hat-trick for the reserves.

For those of you who aren't aware of the goings-on at Morecambe, their takeover by Italian businessman Joseph Cala has been delayed after Diego Lemos, who bought the club in September, obtained a court order preventing the sale.
