Despite bringing eight players in during the January transfer window, Wigan manager Warren Joyce has elected to keep the same side that faced, and lost to, Manchester United on Sunday.

The rumour from the dressing room is that the Latics' boss wants to give his new additions some more time to settle in and get some more fitness in them before risking them in the Championship.

Wigan have lost their last three against Sheffield Wednesday by a single goal. However, they carry back-to-back league wins into this game. A third win would be the first time they've achieved three consecutive victories at this level since March 2014.

The added cherry? They could lift themselves out of the bottom three with three points tonight.

Wigan v Sheffield Wednesday (19:45 GMT)

Wigan boss Warren Joyce names an unchanged side for the third successive game. However, four new faces - Matt Gilks, Omar Bogle, James Weir and Jamie Hanson - are all on the bench.

Sheffield Wednesday hand an immediate debut to striker Jordan Rhodes, following his arrival on loan from Middlesbrough. He is one of four changes, with Jack Hunt, Daniel Pudil and Vincent Sasso also coming in.

  9. Four new benchwarmers for Wiganpublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

Wigan v Sheffield Wednesday (19:45 GMT)

It must have been something of a record to sign eight players on transfer deadline day as Wigan Athletic firmly set out their stall for a Championship survival bid. But it says everything about the spirit that Warren Joyce has already built at the club that none of them start tonight.

Rangers keeper Matt Gilks, 19-goal Grimsby Town striker Omar Bogle, Hull City midfielder James Weir all begin the night warming the bench

But there is no place at all for their most eye-catching addition, former Manchester United and Newcastle winger Gabriel Obertan, not to mention Eastleigh striker Mikael Mandron, Hartlepool midfielder Josh Laurent and Alex Bruce, son of former Wigan manager Steve.

  10. Guaranteed a goal?published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

Wigan v Sheffield Wednesday (19:45 GMT)

Tonight is only the eighth meeting between these two clubs, and only the third on this ground, Wednesday's first-ever trip to Wigan having been a 1-0 FA Cup second-round defeat at the Latics' old Springfield Park home in December 1977.

None of the three previous meetings in Wigan have been goal-filled occasions, the Latics having won the first two meetings 1-0 before the Owls also prevailed by the only goal on their last visit just over two years ago.

None of the seven previous overall league and cup meetings between the two teams have ended in a draw.

  11. McManaman back on familiar soilpublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

One Sheffield Wednesday player particularly looking forward to the journey to Wigan could be Latics old boy Callum McManaman.

The on-loan West Bromwich Albion midfielder began his career at Wigan, scoring 17 times in 109 appearances before moving to The Hawthorns in 2015.

He made his Owls debut in the 0-0 home debut against Wolves on 2 January, but has not started a league game since, featuring off the bench.

Sheffield Wednesday ought to start the night as favourites, given their superior position in the Championship table, seventh, to the Latics' 22nd.

But Wigan are showing the better recent form, having won three games in a row, including their FA Cup third-round win over another Championship side Nottingham Forest, prior to last weekend's fourth-round exit at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

The Owls, by contrast, have won just once in their last six games - although that was against in-form Huddersfield Town.

  13. Good evening and welcomepublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

Friday night is Championship night again at the DW Stadium as Wigan Athletic host Sheffield Wednesday.

This is the first game for both sides since the transfer window closed at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday night - after a day in which Wigan made headlines, by signing eight new players, bringing their total of January additions to 13.

None of them start tonight, although four are on the bench. But Wednesday bring in Jordan Rhodes, the Championship's hottest striker over the last five years.
