Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie told Sky Sports: "We gained control at the start of the second half. We like to perform and play well but three points is the main thing."

Captain Jamaal Lascelles: "We are getting results. We just have to prepare every game the same and keep working hard. We are very pleased with the three points. We rest up and go again."

Another defeat for Aston Villa - that's five in a row now, and some of their followers are fearing the worst...

John Collum-Mills: We are getting sucked into another relegation battle. Something is rotten to the core at Villa.

Mike: Can't help but feel that relegation may be in the cards, no guts in the team and no answers from the manager. Same old story.

Newcastle want to win this league, but the main thing is to win promotion.

The fact that you can take off a player that's scored 20 goals and still beat Villa is testament to them. Dwight Gayle made a good decision to come off if he was struggling.

Newcastle are back on top of the Championship.

It's all but done at St James' Park. It's tough on Villa but Newcastle looked strong after going ahead.

Some encouraging signs for the away side. Although it may be hard to see that as a fifth defeat in five looms large.

As a Nottingham Forest player, Lansbury was involved in a couple of controversial Newcastle red cards when Forest beat the Magpies earlier in the season.

So it's fair to say the home fans enjoyed letting the Villa midfielder know about his error which seems set to wrap up the home win.

Two goals in four minutes with 10 men seems, frankly, impossible.

Can Newcastle round things off with a third goal? They are not settling for 2-0. 

There will be six minutes of time added on. Nearly all of which is down to the Scott Hogan injury.

Newcastle replace goalscorer Yoan Gouffran with Christian Atsu. 

Meanwhile Scott Hogan gets a good send-off from the home fans as well as the the Villa supporters.

The stretcher is on. Scott Hogan is really struggling and Villa will have to finish with 10 men after making all three of their substitutions.

Villa now have Scott Hogan down clutching his ankle and looking in a lot of pain after a corner.

He landed awkwardly and twisted it badly. It's one you wince at as you see it in slow motion.

Villa's night just got worse.

Jonathan Kodjia cannot continue and is replaced in a double substitution which also sees Birkir Bjarnason come off. Leandro Bacuna and Gary Gardner come on.

Newcastle 2-0 Aston Villa

Continuing the theme of big units from earlier, Villa's Jonathan Kodjia needs some treatment after Jamaal Lascelles lands on him following an aerial challenge. 

That would have been some goal. Villa's Jonathan Kodjia does brilliantly with a volley from 20 yards but it goes just over the bar.

Still more than 10 minutes for the away side to get back in this - unlikely as it seems.

Matt Ritchie's direct running and pace has posed problems throughout and he continues to test the Aston Villa defence. 

Another surge forward leads to nothing but Newcastle look the more likely to get the next goal.

They are controlling things now and the visitors are getting stretched.

Suddenly everything is looking rosy for Newcastle. The crowd show their appreciation for some neat passing and a nice move ends with Villa keeper Sam Johnstone called into action once again with a superb save from Jack Colback's cross-shot. 

The first half seems a long time ago for the visitors.

Newcastle could easily have had a third there but Matt Ritchie's near-post strike is well saved by Sam Johnstone.
